It what may be a record for a cop, one officer faces jail for serial pantsu burglary, having filled his home with 600 articles of pilfered pantsu in the course of protecting the public over the last decade.
The 28-year-old Nerima police sergeant had amassed a collection of over 600 articles of female underwear he had obtained during his career.
His arrest came when he was caught sneaking about a Mitaka city apartment in an effort to get at some pantsu he had spied drying on its balcony.
He was further tied to two other pantsu thefts in the same city earlier in the year, but by his own admission this appears to be but the tip of the iceberg.
Prosecutors have sought to make an example of him with an 18 month prison sentence, telling him:
“Your crimes were habitual in the extreme, and the damage wrought on society by an officer sworn to protect the public acting in so criminal a fashion is extreme.”
As might be expected, his lawyers do not think he should be sent to prison and are seeking a suspended sentence instead:
“He has been making out of court settlements with victims, and intends to submit his resignation from the force, so he has suffered enough social sanctions already.”
The officer still claims most of his collection was obtained relatively innocently (or at least non-criminally, if rummaging through garbage in search of discarded underwear is charitably considered distinct from theft):
“I’d been collecting them ever since my time at university, and about half I took from people’s garbage, and whilst I did steal some, the rest I bought.”
Deliberations continue as to his sentence, although considering the near immunity to prosecution Japanese civil servants enjoy, a draconian sentence seems unlikely.
