Saint Young Men Anime Announced

Highly popular holy men manga Saint Young Men (“Saint☆Onii-san”), a slice of life comedy which follows the lives of Jesus Christ and the Buddha as they pursue an impoverished bachelor lifestyle in Tokyo’s otherwise gloriously futuristic Tachikawa city, is finally to receive a full anime adaptation.
The anime will take the form of an OAD episode accompanying volume 8 of the manga in December, to be followed by a feature film at an undetermined later date.
The anime is to be produced by A-1 Pictures and directed by Noriko Takao, whose previous involvement with Kyoto Animation and such classics as Haruhi, Clannad and K-ON! tends to suggest a quality product is in the offing, although this would apparently be Takao’s first major directorship.

This is great news! I've been reading the manga from the start and it's a pretty funny slice of life.
It's in no way offensive to either religion but I can see the fundamentalist Christians in the US getting all bent out of shape at Jesus being portrayed as a 20 something normal guy palling around with the Buddha.
Can't see this anime ever getting exported to the the West because of all the dimwits.
At least no one will be murdering japanese and rioting against Japan. Our "fundamentalists" are way better than other fundamentalists.

Define "the West" since it's actually licensed in France.
As in "Anglo-Saxon West". France seems to have a completely different state of mind in such matters.
They seem to license many manga and anime that never see the light of day in the US,Canada, Great Britain, Australia, NZ etc. because of sex, religion or perceived lolicon.
Up to volume 3 of the manga only Jesus and Buddha plus characters of their religion make an appearance. I don't think the manga will ever include any other religious leaders.

This is actually a pretty fun manga to read. It's both silly and interesting, largely because the premise is for once fairly original.
Looking forward to the movie.
What would be really cool is a live action movie with Johnny Depp as Jesus and Keanu Reeves as the Buddha.
Keanu Reeves has some experience playing the "Enlightened One". He played Buddha in the movie "Little Buddha".
And they will both live in the same apartment and the fangirls will rejoice.
I won't count on Mohammad making a guest appearance. The shitstorm from that would be too immense for Japan to handle. They got enough problems with the Koreans and Chinese.

As one of the few religious people on Sankaku and the internet in general I promise not to raid any embassies and am cautiously optimistic that it will be funny and entertaining without being grossly disrespectful. The way El Shaddai was for the book of Enoch.

From my understanding, buddhism isn't a religion as much as a way of life, it doesn't worship any gods or goddesses, but they exist within, buddha is a teacher, they thank him, not worship. It shares basically everything with Qigong, except Qigong follows the more martial side of buddhism.

The Muslim faith teaches that while Mohammud was a Messenger of God, he was still just a man. He wouldn't fit since he isn't considered divine/enlightened, but rather was a prophet.
The Buddha never claimed to be divine either. He was a man who reached the perfection of "enlightenment" by following the eight fold path.
