It was made for one reason, people liked it.
Why is there speculation on whether or not theres a continuation... The answer is literally in the last few minutes of the episode... Uesugi, Asai, Asakura, and Takeda Shingen herself...
Alot of anime can have open endings and still get no 2nd season. One that immediately pops into my head is Densetsu no Yuusha no Densetsu; definitely a great anime, but no 2nd season.

It is indeed one of the best looking anime for the summer season. I had some great battle scenes.
Now the story pacing is a different matter

It's still one of the best. Consistent animation quality, beautiful use of colors. And Nagahide's Bullet time....
