Yet another schoolboy has succumbed to Japan’s schools and killed himself, with the school’s principal provoking widespread disgust by shamelessly asking his parents “to call it an accident” only the day after his death.

This incident occurred at the start of the month at a Hyogo prefecture high school, where a 17-year-old boy hanged himself. He did not leave a note or any indication as to why.

Investigations, including the obligatory questionnaires circulated amongst students, soon discovered what teachers had supposedly not – he was the victim of severe bullying, with students saying he had been forced to eat insects and and pelted with classroom objects, being  known by classmates as “bugs” and “germs.”

The principal’s response was to try to cover the incident up, phoning the bereaved parents the day after their son killed himself to ask them:

“To avoid having to explain about two or three suicides coming out in our school’s annual assembly, can’t we make this suicide into an unforeseen accident?”

The parents instead later opted to reveal details of his request to the inquiring media.

The school has acknowledged bullying occurred and apologised to the parents, but only comments that it was “unfortunate that this did not reach the sight of teachers” and says it “cannot say whether there was or was not any connection between the bullying and his suicide.”

The principal also says “as the person concerned is dead we cannot say there is no connection between the incidents.”

In related news, police investigating the now infamous Shiga bullying suicide have indicated they intend to drop intimidation charges against the bullies for making their victim “practice committing suicide,” saying there was insufficient evidence – despite 16 students reporting the abuse.

Police say they “cannot confirm” whether the dead boy really was made to throw himself out of windows as the reports suggest, and so they will drop the charges. They are still pursuing a variety of other charges against the bullies.

I AGREE, right now, the moment that boy with the hammer is off the hook, I am so hoping the kid uses his hammer to attack those teachers. Honestly, he is the only friend I want to make right now.

Grrrrr, what is Ishihara doing, all he is doing is trolling on anime and doing nothing to this..this disgusting act of murder. I am shocked, we can well assume he is promoting bulllying himself as he bully anime fans by taking down their anime.

The way he worded it so disgustingly nonchalantly makes me want to pick up a steel pipe and bash all 4 of his limbs.

"Yesterday was the day your boy committed suicide. For me, it was Tuesday."

I am in no way a fan of China, but with everything that's so wrong with Japan nowadays, I'm not sure if China ending up destroying it is a completely bad thing at all...

no, I so agree with you. I would even root for you if you did such a thing. These teachers need the worst possible death to occur to death.

For me, I may be too lenient, just giving them a chinese style execution would be too soft. Those god-damn fools would burn in hell, but I want them to die painfully on earth.

Seeing as he didn't leave a note, he could have been killed for all we know. Or he left a note in which he blamed the administration of the school, which conveniently disappeared before police arrived.

Do these people not watch the news?

"School X tried to cover up their bullying problem and they were lambasted in the media. Maybe, if we ask really nicely, they won't do the same to us".

You'd think that after a number of schools get a pasting for trying to cover up bullying that other schools would actually take a stance against bullying.

expectations what to do when you are adult. No other goal in japan than work work. improve and go higher with you social/work status. Somebody who has read more about this can clarify.

I think it is an inherent nature of Asian culture. The success of a person is measured by how large their annual income is and the prestige of their career(social status). Although having more money and higher social status does help with being better off, I don't believe it guarantees happiness.

tl;dr basically in asian cultures money=happiness

In social outings where life-performance-enhancing commodities are rationed on a position-in-the-system basis, reaching that one single single goal strictly determines how well can you go about your ANY other pursuit. So it's not the only one, but it's so exhausting most people can't get around to anything else.

Japan is on the far end of the collectivist side of the "collectivist/individualist" scale.(America is actually the furthest country on the Individualist side)
In a society where assimilating with the group is of the highest priority, being different for whatever reason is like being a second-class citizen. The pressure just keeps building up; combine that with stressful school and work life, and you get Japan's ultra-high suicide rates.

    20:05 18/09/2012 # ! Neutral (0)

That collectivist/individualist scale doesn't matter that much then. There are nurturing and exploitative collectives, just as there are abusive or unobtrusive societies that thrive on individualism. And you're a second-class citizen if you're poor anywhere in the world, which is what most kids probably are.

You never knew about the suicide rate in Japan before all this? They have had one of the highest overall suicide rates for years and the highest youth suicide rates for much longer than that.

Principal was just trying to keep the school's image from getting any worse. Unfortunately, that's standard protocol over there. Due to the fact that parents are allowed to pick what schools their kids attend.

Of course it happens all over the world. The Japanese just seem to take it father more often or people kill themselves more quickly when being bullied.

I suspect the Japanese are just more extreme with their bullying.
