Hyouka has ended on its 22nd episode to more than a little approval, with viewers praising the unsurprisingly sky-high production values which seemingly accompany any Kyoto Animation production, as well as touching story and lovable characters.
For once the omake have a hard time matching the main feature:

OMG NO KISS? i really loved this show, hoe they make another season if possible in the future.
Typical Kyoto Animation...They did the same thing in Clannad and Clannad After Story...They never showed Nagisa and Tomoya kissing even once, even though they do in the VN...I don't know what their problem is when it comes to showing love between the main characters... ┐( ̄_ ̄)┌ It's pretty annoying. That said, that's also about the only thing I have to criticise about them. KyoAni is the best animation studio imo.
Ho limited your horizons must be for you to think Kyoto animation is the best studio, similar to how westerners think anime starts and ends with the like of naruto or bleach.
It's called OPINIONS...
I also agree that they're the best animation studio.
Arguably the best studio in otaku history... Never released original work.
Sigh...as always hardcore otaku are so narrow minded, if you guys want to talk best animation studio that title goes to STUDIO GHIBLI undoubtedly PERIOD, argue that it is not then, if will be fun to expose your bias yousefl!
...
oh wait, but since Ghibli does not appeal to the moeblob community...
Baseless KyoAni hate won't get you anywhere. Anyone with half a brain (that can think for himself) can see KyoAni is one of the best studios out there. The production values on Hyouka are definitely amazing.
Like the anon above pointed out, they're opinions. No one cares that you believe that Ghibli is the best studio, so go back to your cave, instead of bashing the "moeblob community".
Your ideas on how 'westerners' think is very limited.
HIGH PRODUCTION VALUES DOES NOT EQUAL GREAT SERIES, expand you narrow minded perspective!
But as expected of blind Kyoani lovers, as long as its anything Kyoani and has high production values anything will be a masterpiece in their eyes even if the plot is fucking boring, same as the characters.
Who the fuck cares about limited blinded and biased hardcore fans opinion? Only fellow hardcore fans blinded by anything moe/kyani/VS adaptation.
Go ask the entire anime community which one is the best animation studio and everyone will tell you GHIBLI, PERIOD.
I love some moe like K-ON but I aint fucking Kyoani/MOEBLOB sheep.
2ch opinions arent the entire community opinions, similar to Top 50 Animated and Tokusatu Heroes, thaks the heavens the entire community voted or the list of top hearoes would be dominated by the retarded list we see on 2ch and then reposte dhere on Sankaku with anyhting moe/kyonai dominating the ranks:
http://www.yugiohforums.com/showthread.php?t=81656
Take that!
The novel it's based from has ended in 2010, so sorry, no 2nd season for you!
Sales were bad for this, yes even at 9k, so only in your dreams pal, sorry.
So how did it end?
Typical shitty ending.
Didn't watch any ep yet.
Perhaps the Sky was TOO HIGH?
the Sky = Your Standards? And I wouldn't say those standards were "TOO" High.
More like the chara-designs weren't as "sky-high" as the production values.
arigatou, soushite arigatou \o/
Is there DFC in this anime? If no, then I'm not interested in watching it.
I dropped this crap in earlier eps, could not stand the boredom.
Regarless if anyone considers this good, bad or so so, the sales were a solid failure, and to boot coming from a massive failure like Nihijou, kyoto animatiuon is losing its touch and its depserate to hit it big time again, but in doing so are rushing things are trying to hard, 2 back to back series, 2 failires and who know about the new one, chunyyu..something, seems not good, more crap moeblob.
Are you retarded? This wasn't a failure at all. It's averaging 9.4k per volume. Far above average.
You seem to have this misconception that it's easy to sell over 10k when only 96 anime in the past decade have ever reached that mark.
Of course it's not easy. The prices they sell their DVD/BD for is enough to raise eyebrows.
They price it that high because fans are willing to pay it.
@Yuri: That's correct.
I've been buying the Blu-ray volumes as they are being released.
>10k IS NOT GOOD for a series with the ridiculously high production values + trying to hard to hit hard targeting the moeblob lovers and reuniting the whole K-ON seiyuu cast in order to attract more hardcore buyers -and in case there is some smartass, yes, I do know 4 of them were support characters only except for the female lead-
So: Kyoani + K-ON seiyuu cast (to appeal to hardcore seiyuu fans money) + moeblob + more moeblob + the super high prodction values + doing the kind of series they havce the most succees with + after coming from massive nichijou failure = HYOUKA WAS A FAILURE IN THE SALES DEPARTMENT.Period.
@ Yuri
The retard is you smartass, who dont know shit about the market, there are many factors that determine the success or not, 10k is huge success for most series, 2-3k is ok, 4-7k quite successful, 9k + huge success and above that we have the smash hits and big leagues, in that last department are the oike of the ---monogatari series, K-ON, Gundam, etc... IT ALL DEPENDS ON THE SERIES IDIOT, series like Hyouka are expected to sale 15-20k at least for their target audience and considering their production values, less than that is below average or a failure sales-wise independently if they series itself was good or not or if you liked it.
series like Hyouka are expected to sale 15-20k
LOL.
the "genius" forgot the most important angle, what DVD sales are supposed to actually cover =
the production costs the studio still owes (since they produce each episode at a loss).
its not a magic "for KyoAni they automatically have to sell this much" number.
they have an amount of money to make back, THAT'S what determines if they are selling well or not. that's the number they have to hit.
not some arbitrary "15-20k per DVD".
they owe X amount per episode.
if each DVD has 4 episodes on it, they need to at least sell 4X. and it should be noted that 4X rarely equal 15-20k copies.
15-20k copies equals "they did insanely well", not "barely made costs".
in other words, KyoAni didn't make back costs on K-on. they made costs and then a shit ton of profit on K-on DVD sales.
in summary, how many DVDs they need to sell per volume to make up X costs depends on how much they spent AND HOW MANY EPISODES THEY ARE STICKING ON EACH DVD.
your average series needs to push 3-5k every ~4 eps to break even.
because 3-4 eps/DVD has long been the standard release format, thats why every know-it-all-anime-fan throws around the 5k number for DVD sales.
and that's why its commonly perceived that breaking 5k is pretty golden already. it's not magic, its just plain math.
on to Hyouka, it's pushing 9-10k for each DVD selling TWO EPISODES EACH.
which means they're pushing 18-20k every 4 eps.
so unless KyoAni spent more than 4 times the amount of your average series per episode, which is pretty unlikely, they're more than making their money back on Hyouka.
15-20k sales is required to break even? Nearly 700% above the Manabi Line? Thanks for a great laugh there.
I do hope it sells enough to get a couple of OAV/Movies. I wouldn't object to an original direction S2 but overall S1 was everything I could want. Beautiful and touching.
Oh look at this. People pretending to be industry experts.
I bet you read that article from ANN and considered yourself to know everything about the ins and outs of anime production and its business model.
@anon 09:49
Stop trying hard. Go browse /a/ and troll KyoAni threads there.
" series like Hyouka are expected to sale 15-20k at least for their target audience and considering their production values, less than that is below average or a failure sales-wise independently if they series itself was good or not or if you liked it."
Proof or GTFO. Show me some figures or you can't explain anything. Stop trying to make an argument when you don't have solid facts.
I can tell that you are pretty much ignorant unaware that LN sales and other merchandise account for income itself.
Seriously go back to /a/ [boards.4chan.org/a/]
Its so funny to see all the idiots here that fail to understand whats being told LOL
So many idiots, go back to school, like user above said, it all depends on the series and they all have different circumstances.
FOr some series is enough do do from x to x amount when for others that same x amount would be a total failure.
This is like Atlus celebrating 200k sold of Catherine, can you imagine the likes of GTAIV/V MASS EFFECT 2/3 or maybe a FINAL FANTASY produceers being happy with 200k??
IDIOTS!
The amount of sales needed to brake even will always be different form series to series, and even if they do brake even imagine if for example the next monogatari series ending up selling 15k..coming from 40k+? Even if they brake even can they call it a success? NO, it will be a huge failure that could probably halt further projects, after all fucking corps and capitalism is all about profits in the smallest time possible, do you guys think they will waste time with a series just to break even? NO, they want to make stuff that makes them big profits in a short time, countless anime projects have been doomed because of this, many series DO BRAKE EVEN but they NEVER get a second season or any other project because its not profitable enough, studios instead try new stuff with better potential.
So you watch anime based on the sales?
WTF is wrong with people, criticizing a series more than he/she watches it
NO. Learn to read, the comment is arguing and pointing out the supposed "success" vs "failure" of Hyouka from the harsh cold perspective of sales.
I dropped it because the damn chitanda, is so fucking annoying with her "KI NI NARIMASU".
your avatar is damn annoying than Chitanda
Comment by Anonymous @ 23:04 is so fucking annoying!
almost as bad as the people claiming a video game is good based on sales. lol kids.
i login purposely just to give you a minus. don't have to thanks for me for that
A lot of stupid genius here
Please for the love of god! Spoiler warnings!!!
You probably should've realized that screencaps may spoil something.
You sir just made me laugh!
Comment and avatar just perfectly matched, lol.
stupid Okabe
Will be there "Hyouka ~After Story~" in the next time ?
watashi, kininarimasu
NO. Sales cannot back it up.
If you pay for it maybe, probably they alreaud lost enough money after nichijou/hyouka
Uguuuuu. So... what this anime about?
About stupid kid-level supposed "mysteries" and moeblob, watch it if you want something to get bored with if you have sleep trouble.
If you can't see anything past the surface, then you don't truly enjoy anime. Hyouka is an excellent show for people who enjoy paying attention to details, production values, very smooth character development and such. It's seriously one of the best series I've ever watched, and I watched more than 300 anime. Maybe one day you'll grow up and understand.
Using the word moeblob doesn't make you any smarter btw.
300 anime...sure, what an expert WOW!!!
Go watch anime from since 60´s and up and then we can talk what the best anime, best stuid, and best anything anime-related.
@07:11 I've watched close to around a thousand series, and this is definitely better than most of the generic Anime from the 70's-90's.
Anime from the 70s-90´s generic? Sure, sure, pal, sure, so the golden era of anime, the era of the great classics is generic, sure pal, and then the generic moe, generic harem, generic fanserice of the mid 2000s and counting are the true masterpieces of anime history? Sure sure, I think I dont need to argue much. LOL, generic series form 70-s 90s...sure pal.
@08:20
Surely there were all kind of series in the 60-90s but saying this crap or many of today crappy anime is better than "generic" aniem form those eras is like saying the fucking genetically modified food and basically all kinds of precessed artificial crap we are forced to eat today is better than whatever bad plain untasty food there was prior to the fucking capitalism took over, sounds so moronic and stupid no?
