dude, I liked Naruto and now I'm ashamed of it because of its fans and the cluster-fuck the series has turned into.
Maybe you can like the earlier version of it. I personally like the original Tenchi Muyo OVAs - but the spinoffs (Tenchi in Tokyo, Tenchi TV, etc.) just aren't as good inmho.
...then there's any series ending in "-ash." Bubblegum Crash, Dirty Pair Flash, Nuku Nuku Dash...

i liked all the tenchi series... granted i was a kid, and some barely hold up anymore but i still enjoy them to some extent.
Age and experience. After watching some more anime and other media, you may begin to realize just how derivative, manipulative and shallow your old favorites are.
Of course that shouldn't stop you from realizing you liked them because you were young and inexperienced, but it also can't stop you from feeling ashamed that you fell for it, and can't enjoy the shows on the same level anymore.
^ this explains the entirety of the anime community; just wish that the inexperienced anime viewers would be a little less pushy at the "my show has more episodes because its better" comments and realize all the quality differences franchising causes.
They're still young enough to know everything. That's all. Just chuckle at the naivety, and be there to recommend something more up their alley when they realize that there's a whole world of genuinely engaging, exciting, well-written material out there. Until they're ready, they'll be happy living in the popularity bubble.
Why - regretful? Tolerance from overexposure or saturation, forming bad associations, recognizing efficiency of competitive material might lead to the bad points of a show tipping the balance in their favor. A person worn down by something they liked would be as far from asking for seconds as someone who 'regrets', and not in a better position to physically understand what the ado was about initially.
Maybe they just came to dislike it on their own?

This list is just stupid, the majority of the animé listed tells a great story with likeable characters, that's what is needed to hook audiences up. This list is like saying you can't believe you were into a great movie for having an enthralling plot acted by good actors. The whole point lays there.
Your tune will change over time. Watch some more anime, and you'll see. You can't hide behind rose-colored glasses forever.
Something tells me that they don't remember the plot.
It's more that the initial expectations was not the same as the experience.
I mean Madoka as an example:
without knowing what happened in episode 3, most people I know just thought that it would be a another lame Mahou shoujo anime.
So, this list is for animes that most people that it was going to flunk but on the contrary it was grea.
with the name Gen Urobuchi as the writer, everybody should have remembered by kikokugai and saya no uta what to expect.
@caiooa: most of the people who laud Madoka don't know who Gen Urobuchi is and would laugh at the prospect of watching something from 2003, or playing a visual novel.
"another lame Mahou shoujo anime?" Maybe because it looked bad, but being mahou shoujo doesn't automatically make it lame.
Until episode 3 ? you need to rewatch this, seriously... the mandatory dream intro, madoka's house, the school and its "hamster cages" , the by-the-book mascot rescue in an overly creepy place, etc... Everything in conjunction just shouts : "this is NOT going to end well".
As if "late night airing" wasn't enough of a clue ;)

I watched the entire series, and I can tell you that Lucky Star is sadly pretty shitty. Why did I watch it, you say? Because I was young and impressionable. With hindsight, it's quite shitty. But you'd never know that until you watch it, what with the opinion-proof safety bubble that it's in.
