The US seems ready to dump its useless Japanese lackeys in favour of its much more affordable and numerous new Chinese friends, if polls of the American public are anything to go by.
According to a public opinion survey of American adults undertaken by the Council on Foreign Relations and being gleefully reported by the Chinese press, 70% think that “for American interests relations with China are more important than with Japan.”
Only some 28% thought that America ought to do anything to impede China’s rise, leading many in China to think their rise is so inevitable that even foolhardy Americans dare not oppose them.
Surprisingly, many Japanese seem sympathetic:
“We knew.”
“An unexpectedly sensible set of opinions from them there.”
“Don’t worry, we’ll put up with anything demanded of us!”
“Japan is going to get stuck looking after its old farts now, it’s nothing but a drop-out nation.”
“And how many of those involved with this were Chinese Americans?”

Anyone with brain cells would question the validity og the poll asking who made it and who exactly was surveyed. America has 300,000,000 people and is comprised of almost every ethnicity on the planet, something very very few countries can say. One would need a very large sample size in order to accurately gauge Americans opinions. I agree with you that the poll is skewed, considering this was done by a globalist body like the Council on Foreign Relations. However, America favors China over Japan economically because many large corporations have established offices over there and outsource labor to that region to lower costs and maximize profits. As I said in a similar post, America is a corporation, and the sheeple, and its habitats, intelligible and unintelligible alike, are ruled by corporations and banks. The biggest perpetrator of this scam, the FTC(Federal Trade Comissions) lenient policies towards trade that allow corporations do what the hell they what with the foreign markets, and the Federal Reserve fractional banking system.

As someone from the southern states, I assure you the general spirit is largely indifference, but Japan is held in high esteem due to their products, particularly cars, cameras, TVs, and electronics. People note that there aren't any reputable Chinese brands on the shelves, only Japanese and Korean, and the industry of many large southern cities are completely bolstered by Japanese buisnesses. The city I live in owes a lot of jobs to the local Toyota manufacturing plant.
China is generally supported by the buisness sector interested in foreign investments, particularly people looking at emerging markets. Otherwise the only Chinese media or culture that proliferates the US south is Chinese food, though sometimes it's actually Vietnamese and people just don't know any better.

I also pick Japan over China. I'm working with Japaneses companies and they are far more trustworthy than cheap China ones. From them, I know China strategy is using cheap cost to attract American Companies and slowly steal their technologies. Besides the territory dispute, that's also one of the main reason why Japanese companies are leaving China right now.
I don't like how China exploits their employees for cheap labors and backwater handlings by American companies!!!

I have. About 20 years ago I got a bunch of questions by mail. Questions about my yearly income, social status, kids, who I voted for last time, and so on. It said in the letter with it, that it was anonymous. But on top of each page was a small 10 digit number.
What I think went on, is that it was not a poll, but a profiling. And it would be used to feed a database with my profile, so later, when they want to make a poll, they can ask the database for ”random” people who is likely to give the desired answer.
Paranoid as I am, I made the 10 digits numbers not readable, and send it back with a letter telling them if it was anonymous they had no use for that 10 digit number.
Here 20 years later I have never since been invited to take part in a poll.
I am not in the US though. But I for one do like Japan alot.

If/when America were to wage such a war and if/when the US won such a war they could ask for reparations that would waver debts, setting balance to zero and fragmenting China into three, possibly five different nations.

Ofttimes there's not much that can be done about it. There's just not enough "comparable products" manufactured elsewhere.
So much work has been shipped overseas that even the NSA reports that IF America were to get into a war with China, we would enter into in a crippled state, unable to produce enough textiles & quality of life items to last in a long term war. What few goods could be produced would sell for overinflated costs and the time it'd take to retool & retrofit existing buildings would discourage many from doing so.
