Men Busted for Cheerleader Snaps: “Isn’t That The Point?”

Police have arrested two men for the crime of photographing a group of cheerleaders on a stage, although some have criticised them for an excess of diligence when all the men were found to have taken photographs of was their thighs.
The incident occurred at a Kanagawa prefecture high school “culture” festival where a group of 27 high school girls were performing a cheerleader dance on stage.
Two men in the audience, a 36-year-old civil servant working for the prefecture and a 43-year-old banker, disgracefully attempted to film the girls as they cavorted, taking close-ups of their bare thighs and clothed bodies.
A vigilant teacher noticed them brazenly using their cameras and decided they were suspicious, and their photographs were checked by teachers at the school’s staff room and they were reported to police as voyeuristic perverts.
The pair admit photographing the girls, saying they did it together as part of a “hobby,” and that they met at another such event and have been photographing other schoolgirls in public as well.
They have both been charged with indecent activities and trespass for attending the show in the first place.
There has been a certain amount of confusion amongst Japanese as to how photographing cheerleaders on a stage constitutes criminal voyeurism:
“What is wrong with photographing cheerleaders?”
“How can you get arrested for this?”
“How is this voyeurism?”
“If you don’t want people taking photographs or watching them why hold a cheerleader show on a stage?”
“But they only took photos of their thighs?”
“If photographing anyone but your friends is a crime, they might as well ban cameras.”
“Since when is photography banned at these events…”
“It’s creepy but I don’t see any crime.”
“Yet this is legal:”
“They should arrest that NHK cameraman then.”
“Odd that all the paparazzi photographers never get arrested just because they do it for money.”
“They are doing it for the money rather than to satisfy their lust, so it’s quite different.”
“Doing it for the money frankly seems more creepy than just doing it out of lust…”
“What about NHK and its cameramen taking pictures of wet schoolgirls getting uplifted by typhoons?”
“I thought the whole point of cheerleaders was the short skirts and panchira.”
“And yet the mass media happily photographs gymnastics and beach volleyball all the time.”
“It seems excessive that these two get their names dragged through the national press for this when there are murderers and worse who never have their names made public.”
“Why just arrest them like that? You’d think they’d at least warn them to stop photographing. It’s not even clear if the school bothered telling anyone it had banned photography.”
“I reckon they could get away with this if they took normal photographs and then just enlarged the bits they were interested in on their computers later.”
“They took photos of their thighs, they are obviously guilty!”
“It was only a close-up though? And not even of their underwear.”
“The whole point of cheerleaders is to show off the girls though…”
“They obviously weren’t supposed to be at the event either.”
“You lot wouldn’t like it if a bunch of creepy old guys were photographing your thighs whilst you were up on stage either.”
“How can a public performance in a public place possibly constitute ‘voyeurism’ or ‘peeping’?”
“This country is becoming seriously oppressive.”
“If this is a crime, then the cheerleaders themselves must be guilty of public indecency.”
“Nice to see our police and teachers have their priorities straight – kids are being bullied to death in schools, and they focus on the important stuff like this.”

I can see them being thrown out if they were photographing in such a way that it was disturbing to the performers and/or the other attendants, but I don't get "being charged with trespass for attending the show"-part. Was it not open to the public?
They need to define the cultural festival, is it open to all public or for the public neighbourhood, or just for the relatives and friends of the students. Did anyone invite them etc, is the high school a private school or an actual public school (though there's some crazy definition between private and public school in the Japanese use of the concept)
“You lot wouldn’t like it if a bunch of creepy old guys were photographing your thighs whilst you were up on stage either.”
If you don't want people to protograph your thighs, you probably don't go on a public stage wearing a short skirt and start dancing. Just a thought.
this logic is the same logic that puts the blame of rape on a woman because of the clothing she wears.
this is wrong no mattet how you look at it. photographing close ups of areas like these is a blatant violation of personal space. im not even mentioning the fact that theyre high schoolers. good on the teacher and police, shame on these comments from online japanese readers.
Well. You cant easily do things that you do when seeing tights in real as opposed to their photos. And most people don't want for some creepy guys constantly doing it with their photos because who nows how it turns out afterwards... :)
Whores always play the victim, thou they dressed like whores.
Well, they whores might want to appeal to some of the audience. It doesn't automatically mean they have to be absolutely indiscriminate about accepting the attention that comes back at them, without concern about where it comes from and in what kinds of ways it does. Nothing wrong with that. If I dress as, say, an anime otaku, it doesn't mean I'm out there to buy any anime-related paraphernalia someone might want to throw at me.
Even if this particular case should be a non-issue, unless they were disturbing the performers or the audience. A regular bootleg.
Bootleg? What does that mean? Dictionary no nice :U
LOL, whore means one of two things...
1. exchanginbg sex for money
2. just about every other women when it is a lonely otaku hating on women for whatever rejections they had in the past (usually the context used on this site)
Japanese women wants to be seen, by young hot western looking men that they see in movies, as opposed to old soggy looking creeps that make up the entirety of Japanese male population.
If the girls don't like to be watched wearing a short skirt, they should wear Burkas. That way, they are 99.9% safe from creepy oglers. Might get arrested as terrorists though.

ikr... thats like porn star wants people to watch their film for their acting skills.
Suddenly thought of Chappelle.

How many times must I tell you? 3D Women Ruin Lives. Don't fall to the temptation. If only adam had 2d moe instead of eve we would all be living in a perfect paradise where no bad things ever happen.
Apparently God didn't like the idea of Adam standing around in the garden fapping in front of the animals in his birthday suit.
You're wrong. Only non-creepy guys may ogle sluts. That's why these guys were arrested. What world do you think we live in? Once where girls dress in skimpy outfits and dance on stage in public for just anyone?
If you don't want people to steal your watch and break your face, you probably don't leave the house and walk around in public. Just a thought ...
Believe it or not, that certainly is going to reduce the chances of someone "stealing your watch and breaking your face afterwards".
Well if you kill yourself, nobody can steal _your_ watch anymore because there won't be _you_. It's not valid a reason for such action though.
There's absolutely no need to resort to such extreme actions like killing yasself.
Less "going out" and more "staying at home" is sufficient, easier to do, and it's assured to work.
In short: your 'argument' sucks.
....why don't cha just NOT WARE THE WATCH.....
Except that you may not be able to stay indoors. If you require to go outside for work, school or simply shopping, you may not have a choice.
You could stop wearing a watch, but work or school might limit you to that choice as well.
Which is exactly where this differs from not wearing short skirts the length of an ant. After all, there are plenty of choices besides those clothes. You may argue that their club requires them to wear that, however there are other clubs. So that's not a good argument either.
Bottom line is, like some infinities are greater than others, so are some choices more free than others. Which clothes to wear is one of the choices with the greatest amount of options in all 1st world countries.
well said.
It's in a school, it's not a public place. Nothing wrong with the situation.

Best Comment!
That is pretty indecent of them to just take pictures of their thighs like that especially being 36 and 43. It's pretty creepy, but I can't see this as being Illegal. Unless there was this massive ban of photographs at the event, these guys should be free to go. Like an anon mentioned before me, if you don't want to be photographed you should not be on a stake in a miniskirt in the first place where you have to accept the fact that people will have the right to take your pic for w/e reasons.
They are a bunch of pussies after all.
There is very relevant comment on the Reddit: http://www.reddit.com/r/InsightfulQuestions/comments/ybgrx/with_all_the_tools_for_illegal_copyright/c5u3nm4 It's about jailbaits but it's very relevant to the case.

There's more picture? Fix the link!
I have my priorities straight.
Yeah all we need is a panty-shots. The article text is unnecessary excess here.
Probably this picture:

There is so little love in this world that people strive it even the wrong way.
That's actually pretty profound and philosophical. What are you doing on sankaku. XD
Hey, we exist too :P
Thoughts of a Japanese teacher: "Are they taking pictures of my schoolgirls? HOW DARE THEY! They are MINE to abuse! I SHARE WITH NO ONE!"
The real tragedy here that the media focuses on reporting stuff like this while people are still homeless from Fukushima.
That's cause no one cares about a bunch of hick farmers in some obscure region.
Also those hick farmers employ Chinese & Korean immigrants. The less farmland in Japan, the better.
Yeah it's pretty fucked up that the media would shine light on the justice system behaving in an evil and insane manner. Corrupt/abusive behavior by their government is just not something that people should be informed of.
You fucking moron.
Police should have seized their phones & computers too.
And also pass on your home and if you have only one photo suspicion, arrest you too.
Curious a police completely incompetent.
Waste time on matters totally stupid and turns a blind eye to issues really worrying.
The teacher probably was jealous of his students(the harem of pantsu is his alone)
Artefact's ability to choose relevant pics for the post never ceases to amaze me (Arima <3).
As for the news, the charges against those two are retarded. Wasn't it a public performance open to anyone?
if ur not doing it for money it's not legal..
This is almost as stupid as the guy who was arrested for being near school girls. Almost...
Why the holy fuck would the teacher(s) even care! It's not even indecent in the first place.
The teachers don't want any competition. They consider those girls their personal hunting stock & don't want any outsiders beating them to the punch.
Does this mean there's an official photobook being prepared right now, and that it will be made mandatory learning material at some point?
