i am really interested what is going offline in that anime while all those people are always playing the game and some dying
short story, a bureau was formed, quickly moved them to hospitals (the anime doesn't mention it but the "death" rules allowed a 2 hour disconnection from net signal). They keep searching for Kayaba but haven't found it. They monitor the servers but the only information they seem to be able to gather is the players levels.
Meanwhile the company that produced nervegear and the game went bankrut from all the lawsuits and stuff was bought by another company (can't say much else without spoiling latter arcs)
