Japanese women asked what they think the most undesirable things to see serving as mobile phone wallpaper display none-too surprising resistance to seeing any “childish” anime characters featuring, considering the holders of such phones so creepy only abject narcissists were considered more undesirable.
The results of the survey, with the charming comments of the ladies questioned:

I work in Japan and have an anime wallpaper on my iphone though, and although I try to hide it for these kind of reasons a man on the train did see it once and kind of grimmaced.
Wasnt even a risque picture, it was just anime. (well, technically, fanart.) Anime just isnt that 'cool' to a lot of japanese people, whether male or female, likely because their impression of it is forever tainted by the kind of stories we see about certain fans on here.

I imagine they're conducted in a busy area of a city, which tends to be a shopping centre. -Usually-, the types of girls who tend to hang around such busy shopping centres skew on the materialistic and shallow side. If only they'd thought to ask the girls quietly milling around the bookstores.

On a different note, I've always been jealous of all the awesome clamshell cellphones Japan's getting. I've been looking for a nice one available here where I live but the best one out there is Motorola V9 which has no modern features about it whatsoever.

I don't know the current state of things there, but traditionally you'd need an unlocked phone from KDDI or something because they do GSM. Lots of DoCoMo phones would simply be incompatible.

Or at least in North America, it's quite normal and socially accepted to see people with photos of their girlfriend/boyfriend or spouse or children, or simply photos of friends and family (self being included is fine too) as wallpaper.

Or ya know..they want to see their loved ones whenever they open their phone? They're only 'showing off' if they're actually making or pushing you to look at their pictures. But if the background to their private systems that they use on a regular bases 9 times out of 10 has nothing to do with anyone else, let alone wanting to show off or flaunt it. Personally I think it's sweet if my partner has a picture of me as their background on their phone/computer.
