Metal Gear Solid Hollywood Movie Announced

Metal Gear Solid is the latest franchise to be given over to Hollywood’s tender mercies, with fans of the series left wondering whether the movie will follow in the glorious footsteps of Hollywood’s past video game adaptations, or the even more esteemed path of its many adaptations of popular Japanese entertainment franchises.
According to reports, as part of its glorious 25th anniversary the Metal Gear franchise will be getting a live action Hollywood movie adaptation produced by both Columbia Pictures and Sony.
Details of casting and which parts of the sprawling franchise will be first in line have yet to be announced.
Kojima Productions boss Hideo Kojima explains that he had been searching for years for a suitable production team to create a fitting movie adaptation, but with the availability of Avi Arad to oversee things and his reputed success at adapting American comic book classics (or Marvel comics at any rate) he had confidence he would do Snake justice as well.
Arad for his part pledges “not to do anything bad to the Metal Gear Kojima created” and promises “to make a wonderful movie in the spirit of the original,” doubtless dispelling the doubts of all but the most pessimistic of naysayers.
However, whilst few doubt Kojima’s competence or the power of the Metal Gear franchise, equally few will be able to forget Hollywood’s record at producing adaptations of both video games and beloved Japanese entertainment franchises…

This could actually be good. Even better than generic superhero comic adaptations. MGS is already very cinematic as a game, so why not do a movie?

At most the game topped out of players at around 6 million on the original world wide release and its other reprints... and seeing that America has about 300 MILLION people wandering about the lands & adding a few BILLION people more around the rest of the world, Most have NOT seen this "movie".

Yepp. My thoughts too. Even Final Fantasy VII AC is missing that Steam punk style feeling and is way too clean. And that is the best Video game adaptation. The other movies (Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Tomb Raider...) is just "let us rape the franchise and the fans and squeeze as much money out of as possible. Now Metal Gear? OMG >>

AC wasn't an adaption- it was a sequel, the world was a peace regardless of the disease still being afoot. AC was made for people that played the games, where actual adaptions are trying to included the mainstream audience- the Tomber Raider films actually did that pretty well. The first resident evil film laid out perfectly as a B-side to the first game. Silent Hill's genderswap was excusable even. It's the sequels that ruined these...

you know i dont think it will be that bad... Hideo Kojima I dont think will let it get bad. I mean look at what he created! Hes been a hand in everything! Well rising might have slipped up but Raiden is a gay character anyways. But I think he will be there every step of the way to make sure everything will go as it should. I believe in HIDEO KOJIMA!! you should too!!!!

Unfortunately Kojima may not have much to say. A lot of times the creators sign away creative control for big bucks and a promise by the studio to do it right and then Hollywood turns it into a pile of crap with the author later bitching he wasn't consulted and they ruined it.
Rising isn't even out yet. Haters gonna hate.
It's like China. Either you get your own people up top make sure they're doing it right, or just let them take it from you and turn it into complete crap
As somebody who works for a company with production lines in China. I can testify to that. Chinese can and are quite capapble of turning out good results. But the catch is that you need to have somebody who's extremely strict from your end on site. Otherwise they end up taking however many shortcuts they could and pass whatever shit they ended up with and calls it a day.
Surely Kojima won't let this movie end up being garbage. I want to have faith in this project.

Just get the people behind Leon & The Rock and you've got the tools to make a good movie out of MGS.

Not sure if I agree with you there. Kojima always wanted to make movies, he knows his stuff, you just have to play MGS to realise that. I'm not saying he should go and direct the Metal Gear Solid movie (it'd be awesome if he did, though), I just think he should watch over the process and not let others turn his successful franchise into a bad joke of a movie. I'm sure he won't let that happen.
