A schoolboy has hurled himself from the top of one of Tokyo’s tallest buildings, earning much attention for his “bravery” and unusual choice of location.
The boy ascended to the rooftop observation deck of Sunshine 60 at 7:40PM, scaling the 3m fence and evading the security guard present to prevent just this sort of thing, and leapt to his death below.
He landed on the roof of the entrance, dying immediately – fortunately no passers-by were injured. The security guard above says he witnessed him climbing the fence and told him to stop, “but he didn’t stop,” and summoned police after he jumped.
Police managed to identify him as a high schooler from the ID he carried, and are treating the case as a suicide. A note found in his bag made reference to “unfortunate” events but the details have not been made public.
Sunshine 60, a 240m high 60 storey skyscraper housing shopping and leisure facilities in central Tokyo’s Ikebukuro entertainment district built on the site of Sugamo Prison, was the tallest building in Tokyo when it was opened in 1978, although it now stands as only the 4th (the height of Tokyo’s vast numbers of tall buildings tends to be dictated by real estate conditions rather than competitive erection).
Suicide is the leading cause of death for young Japanese, although leaping from tall buildings is a relatively unusual method – the majority of deaths take the form of quiet strangulations at home.
Amongst Japanese, more attention has accrued to the bravery required for making such a leap than the reasons why yet another schoolboy felt the need to take his own life…

Appropriate avatar for an appropriate comment.
If he had tried to physically stop the kid he'd have been charged with child molesting..
Lmfao funniest comment yet

If it was the US the boy would have been shot down before he could climb the fence.
No no no, if this was the US he would have amassed a cache of weapons. Then massacred a bunch of people, most likely the bullies at his school, before shooting himself or letting police shoot him.
Suicide by cop is what its called.
final blaze of glory as they call it, right?
lol true in America they get angry and take everyone down with them. In japan they get sad and go alone.
Exactly. It would just be a homicide instead of a suicide, but either way the kid would be dead.
A win-win situation for the boy, eh?
Depending on the timing and distance between the guard and the boy, it could have actually been all he could do. Who knows.
I wonder if he regretted it as he was falling. I heard survivors who attempted suicide jumping off bridges say that is the first thought that comes to their head.
high alt jump
pros
* surety of death
* while freefalling at least some time to do some cool backflips, barrelrolls and shiz you always skipped while being too afraid to hurt yourself
cons
* time to regret; surety of death
* you´re not going to try those again, no matter how awesome it was
* you die and go to hell (insert religious beli...whatev)
"Hey. You stop climbing that fence. Yeah. My job is done here."
What the fuck.
Maybe the boy was so amused with the new Assasins Creed 3 Gameplay that he wanted to do a leap of faith himself. Too bad nobody places haystacks next to high buildings anymore.
Feels like Kara no Kyoukai...
Looked like Ghost in the Shell to me.
More like MIB 3.
Haven't seen it yet.
If the security guard was a hot chick and gave the boy a kiss this would've been a different story...
Pretty sure I've seen that doujin...
They live in Japan.
Except she was a sniper.
LOL yeh. Someone please tell me, why do they feel the need to take their own lives, and why is it so widespread?
that only happens in China
In China, exploding chairs do the trick.
I nearly died laughing. Knew exactly what your were talking about. I think I got that one back when K-ON doujin were all the rage.
Joking or not sometimes female love can save a man. Sadly women are extremely selective in who they mate with. We males pride ourselves in many things including gaining a girl.
Feels like Lain...
Yeah, there's indeed a scene a girl jumped off from the building and died tragically in "Kara no kyoukai".
MAGARE!

Leading cause of death among young people
In Japan: Suicide
In 'Murrica~!: Drunk driving, drug overdoses.
At least the ppl of America are having fun when they go and none of this moping woooo is me bs lol
Perhaps they commit suicide because they lack adequate access to drugs, alcohol and cars...
A week later it turns out he was bullied...
It was implied he was via his note.
Another week and it was all his fault or video games... or anime... or other scapegoat...
"The security guard above says he witnessed him climbing the fence and told him to stop, “but he didn’t stop,” and summoned police after he jumped."
I'm at a loss of words here.
This is the country where police walk around parks and the street alone and unarmed and politely ask people not to break the law when they encounter them doing so.
It is also the country where this works, somehow. Was a hell of a culture shock.
Unless you're a foreigner, then they harass your ass until they get bored.
Fucking bullshit. The cops were all ridiculously cool and helpful to me while I was there.
Japan's police force = security guards
> and unarmed
Police in many countries is unarmed to prevent them becoming a target of criminals, willing to steal their weapon. FYI.
> Implying there isnt a healthy black market for weapons.
Well, it's not that Japanese cops don't have guns, they do, it's just not EVERY cop has them like in America. Only "Specially certified" officers or Detective's can carry gun's. The rest have to make do with those collapsible batons and whatever martial arts they know (if any).
This works because of Japan's very strict gun law's (namely that citizens can not legally posses a handgun) so most criminal's don't use them since the only way to really get one other than stealing it from the cops or JDSF would be to smuggle it in, and that means it'll would be ass expensive. A kendo stick or baseball bat are way cheaper and much easier to buy.
Yes. They also arrest you for looking and/or talking to "children" in the streets. Also, if something does happen, they are not exactly shining with competence. Most of the time.
Hey, it worked in Norway too until the the number of muslims and right-wing extremists shot up.
Why a loss of words he was already on the edge. would you have rather the guard climb after him? He could have took the guard with him what about the guard family. Then what try to stop him, try talk him down. I know the guard has his own problems and I know might my point comes of as selfish but really to blame someone form someone-Else's actions. Really to think the guard may have stop him. He might have gotten the help he need, but then what he goes back to his old habits. Start think of how he failed the first or hell the fifth time. Then everyone knows in a country were if dishonor your self or your family you do-it. Well at leas he doesn't have to clean it up :/
Taken him with him? How in the hell would that have happened? The kid use his super human strength and yank the guard over the fence?
the kid had to climb a 9 ft fence before he could jump off. I'm sure the guard could have pulled him off the fence before that.
And What if the kid was already at the top? If the kid fell while the guard was holding him, they might've both gone down.
