Final Fantasy XIV’s desperate rescue project Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn appears to be in danger of succeeding, with fresh screens and gameplay videos from the beta leading many to concede “it actually looks good” and “it may even be worth playing,” some improvement over the whipping boy status it formerly enjoyed.

There is a certain amount of scepticism as to how much of these visuals will be possible on the PS3’s now (by glorious PC gaming master race standards) pathetically underpowered hardware, but on the PC it now looks set to give other MMORPGs a run for their money – graphically at any rate…

"Looks" is what FF is good at
It's always had looks, it's everywhere else it falls short.
Not everywhere, music is also mostly top tier.
yea i got FFXIV and it looked awesome but there wasn't like any dungeons or quests just grinding ~ not exactly the qualities of a good MMO

.hack dungeons were one of the worst parts. they were all the same over and over again.
the history was good and battle system too but the game gets kinda repetitive after some time
Why can't things be more like .hack// when it comes to dungeons? Sure it wasn't a REAL mmo, but that mechanic was pretty well designed!
Because you're talking about the .hack game, and he was talking about "The World" the game in .hack. The dungeons werent always the same had lots of variety. The point of .hack was that each area is randomly generated to look different.
I agree. I think we've all be burned too many times. It'd take nothing less than a miracle to regain the magic.

UI is customization as seen in the video. If you don't like busy you can probably make it less so
The Graphics weren't the issue with the original release it was really bad lag. Not just server lag but the UI stunk and was slow.

There is dark future shit in the imperial areas including airships that look like shit from star wars and giant robots and machines n shit
The pseudo f2p model was the only thing that kept this thing somewhat alive. Them switching back to subscription might have attracted a few of those elitist prick people (we all know them)back to the game but i seriously doubt it will do the game much good. Bigger and better titles are all going b2p or f2p because that is the future. Saturation kills the market. People are growing weary of picking up monthly paid games.
My preferred model certainly is buy and play online for free with a trivial in-game shop. F2p is very good for B or C titles, like those bazillions of Korean grinders or old titles that finally switch over.
NCSoft / Nexon are great by the F2P models.
You'd think Square could learn.

I LOVED the graphics engine before. Never before have I seen such expansive landscapes.
These screenshots are so bad though it's hard to tell the true quality. Because it looks like they moved to Deferred rendering(or lighting). Texture quality looks suspect!

It makes me wonder how they will make a PC master race game work on the PS3, with game size and ram limitations in the way.

I hope they fixed DoW and DoM leveling, the combat jobs level way way to fast in ff14, I played it a few months ago, and got whm to cap fairly fast w/o even trying in a few days.

Anyone else bothered by the jagged tree trunks and big flat slabs of texture passing for leaves? I haven't seen polygon count this low since the '90s... It's ironically nostalgic.
I'm actually going to play Devil's Advocate here. Usually, an MMORPGs graphics will be a generation or so behind those of a single player game. This is deliberate. It's so more players can join in the game and so the game will run more smoothly on more computers.
Sure you could make your MMO in the RED Engine with graphics pushed to the max and it would make the game really pretty but it would also cut your player base in half. A great many people couldn't join in because they can't afford a top of the line gaming PC.
Their budget is going to hell since FF13 and beyond all failed so this is all the fans get.
They are reworking an existing game released 2 years ago, which started development 5 years before.
Also, need I remind you that this is going for PS3 too? Square isn't generous enough to allow their PC games to be upscaled far beyond their console versions. Not many company has done it.
These days, they just port the game to PC straight from the console version. Rarely do you see a game made to take advantage of latest PC hardware like Deus Ex or The Witcher 2.
