A recently restored section of the Great Wall of China has collapsed, prompting much soul-searching as to how modern Chinese construction techniques could not keep standing for 2 decades what had previously stood for centuries.
The collapse occurred on 36m section of the Great Wall running through Hebei province suddenly one morning, shaking the adjacent town.
The section in question reportedly underwent major restoration work in 1995, and upon its completion in 1996 it was hailed as “returning the wall to its traditional splendour.”
Local authorities have acknowledged it was the restored section which fell down, blaming heavy rains for weakening its foundations and causing structural weaknesses.
However, with the adjoining unrestored sections completely intact even after centuries, a certain amount of scepticism has attached to the quality of both their workmanship and ongoing oversight.

Now how will they keep the Mongolians out?
damn mongolians break down the shitty wall
It is more likely, how will they keep their own people in? I doubt the Mongolians have much interest in China these days.
At least it didn't explode.
No, that's wrong.
It's when will it explode.
I guess modern china quality is still affecting them
It should be called The Wall of Shame
Its old of course parts will fail. Why even waste time and money fixing many parts of the wall, its probably an eye soar.
The point being that it isn't the old parts that failed, but the newly restored ones.
I'm not sure how they built it back then but it probably wouldn't be worth the time, effort, or money to redo it the same way.
But at least make something that can endure rain.
Actually, it would probably be easy-peasy to do it the same way as back in the past. Labor intensive, yes..... hard to do, no.
Eye SORE, seriously, is it that difficult?
Also, when you have one of the wonders of the world, you keep on top of maintaining it. As has been stated, it's the new refurbished bits that are failing, not the old, time-tested parts.
They should really stop using explosive rubbish as building material and the explosives that they mixed in the rubbish didn't even explode, oh china.
Ah, now I see why we Chinese value old things.
I find that common problem with china infrastructure today is the lack of adequate foundation
I would say it's more a lack of adequate materials as garbage is commonly not first class building material...
I remember the garbage bridge article. Who the hell in this world make a bridge from a garbage.
cost sensitive people?
People who don't have to cross that bridge after completion.
The German dude
I have to agree, when you have fake pills filled with lead, copied movies, counterfeit everything, maybe one place to not be cheap is what was once a monument.
Yeah. I may not know what I'm talking about, but I suspect this is a symptom of the extremely lax enforcement of laws (or lack of laws) about counterfeit and shoddy goods. Sure, it lets them cheaply flood the rest of the world with fake products in return for real money, but then when it comes time to build something that really counts, who can say they're really using proper materials? They'd have to establish a separate closed infrastructure to build everything independently and audit it to ensure no corruption or shortchanging had taken place - EVERY SINGLE TIME they wanted to do something serious.
I figured there would be special punishments for those who would defraud a government project, but I suppose who is to say the suppliers even know the products they're moving aren't legit? And if they did know, are they still around to be held accountable or have they just changed name and location?
Doesn't really matter, a lack of proper foundation is still entirely preventable so China fails so hard here.
Actually, China has laws about this shit. The problem is that most times, the public officials are corrupt and taking kickbacks to overlook this shit.
China needs to start executing public officials who are found to be taking bribes. Hell, America needs to start doing that.
They just need to use the top quality materials like the emperor did back in the day....dead bodies >.>
It's magic glue after 200 years of gluing stuff together.
No! Isnt it obvious the Aliens built it. No human could have made the great wall. If we cant make it now how could they in the past. just like the pyramids
I would say it's either:
1. A lack of brains
2. A lack of honesty and greed
Do you mean a lack of (honesty and greed)
Or dou you mean a (lack of honesty) and greed?
I find that a common problem with those filthy Americans is their obesity and lack of intelligence.
The only person here who is filty, obese, and lack of intelligence is you
Well, no, we are a pretty obese and stupid society in general. Thankfully that is coming to light even within our borders and steadily things are being done to make people more aware. But if that's a Chinese person's defense when their own nation's flaws are mentioned, then China not only builds dangerous trash that puts their people at risk, but also are children about it and lack the honor to take responsibility for their failures. Whether we do the same or not, it just means they're no better than those they hate.
I hope this article's wording is true to be honest. I hope their nation watching the structure that represents their longevity, strength, and precision being ruined by their own hands will be a spiritual awakening for them.
you sound mad about something...
you sound racist
Yeah, but at least our construction stands the test of time.
"Yeah, but at least our construction stands the test of time."
Until you fly a plane into it.
No no no. The common problem with those dirty barbarians is that they all fail in life.
Sounds like somebody is really insecure about something. Well haters gonna hate anyway.
same can be said to you and most of the community in sankaku.
haters gonna hate.
But, Isn't the obesity on a rise in China?
Not to mention their laughable constructions...
Must be, I porked a Chinese fattie from Singapore. Only thing memorable about it was being able to cum inside her all I wanted. The fat slut was infertile.
Careful, your penis might explode.
@05:15 - Aww, you made bro? Seriously, you mad? Sounds like you are mad about something... I wonder if it's seeing a historical landmark that was once something to brag about, being reduced to shadow of it's former self because your country can't create anything without it either A) exploding or B) completely destroying itself in some way.
I do feel sorry for you. I mean how on earth can a modern restoration project be constructed so horribly that the rest of the wall which is hundreds of years older, can still stand even today? While said restoration project has crumbled in 1/10th of the time.
I'm not to fimilliar with the origianl construction of the Great Wall but it looks like it was just filld with dirt and briks were laid around it. I thought it war solid constrution.
It is supposed to be solid construction on some sections, they pound the dirt layer by layer repeatedly until it hardens
rammed earth is strong as fuck its really solid unless high humidity gets inside of it tho it'll fall apart pretty easily
which is why we still have tons of centuries old buildings still on this planet
It's solid unless high humidity gets inside of it you say. They did say that heavy rains was a factor of it's collaps.
I'm beggining to think that they just dumped the dirt there and diddn't bother to compact it at all.
This is the difference between thousands of (mostly forced labor) man hours and a government contract that probably went to the lowest bidder.
I'm pretty sure Beijing was rocked by an earthquake from all the unmarked or marked graves having their contents roll over simultaneously from this travesty.
The loss of Confucianism due to Mao and Friends was a severe blow to that once much more highly respected country.
I can answer their dilemma it's very simple they didn't cut corners in China centuries ago like they do today.
The old school china was the good school if you ask me. Chinese today (as far as I've seen) have no real love for the things they once held dear.
