Ok, um...who the FUCK is Tomoyo? I have seen Saikano(about 50,000 times) and I own it on DVD(2 times actually)...there is not ONE SINGLE character who is named Tomoyo. There is Chise, Shuji, and Akemi, plus minor characters but none are named Tomoyo. >_>
While Google keeps translating her name as Tomoyo, her voice actor is listed as Fumiko Orikasa, which is Chise's voice actor...
So I can only assume that on this list: Tomoyo = Chise

Yomi should have been no.1 on such list. But this polls are made by the most otakuish population of Japanese anime fans and they are famous for their short and small memories along with bad judgment.

Also, all Madoka characters too dominating. Kaname Madoka should be expelled from that list, because her fate isn't too tragic to be at that list.

That was my thought too, I don't remember anything tragic about her at all in the anime.
The tragedy of her losing a potential boyfriend to her best friend and losing her best friend to her potential boyfriend?
And that she was fully aware of it but did it because it was the best thing to do.
Let's just say that while she's always smiling and cheerful on the outside, the same cannot be said for inside her heart.

I thought the same thing. For a character that appeared and died in the same ep she shouldn't really be that high.
It's the presentation. She is too timid to leave that inn in the first floor, before her guildies drag her out of it to try and find their way out. Then they met Mr. Level-40 and thought everything will be okay. And then the noob amongst them go spring a trap and caused a perma-party wipe.

#7 doesn't even belong here. Show was too mediocre to even evaluate the characters effectively when the show itself didn't settle on what it was trying to accomplish.
I'll throw in a dark horse vote for Berzerk's Caska. Spoilers to follow.
starts as peasant filth, commits a serious crime, dooming her to short painful life as a mercenary. Survives against all odds. Lashes out constantly at the one person who might understand her. Spends years silently in love with a sociopathic narcissist who then does something stupid, leaving her in command of mercenaries now hunted by the world's strongest army. After burying her comrades for months, she starts to rebuild, only for said narcissist to show up and end the world. Raep.
If none of this is impressive enough, she also manages to be a genuinely good, flawed person while staying mostly sane. Quite a feat in Berzerk's shitty world.
Probably just as well she's not on the list. It's kind of a hard act to follow.
I wholeheartedly agree. The only issue I'm having is that even right there at the end, just before HELL happened, she still loved that narcissist AND Gats to the point where she was still conflicted about which one to chose!
Of course, she'd seem a lot more tragic if she didn't feel like an object.
Well, the heart wants what it wants, and that seems to be a major theme of the anime. It's age old- why does Archie date Veronica when Betty's much nicer to him?
Even though there is objectively a better choice, he's not attractive in the same ways, and doesn't seem to need her. The narcissist is using Casca's good heart against her. I think what the ending really sells is the refutation of this; even the most pathetic, helpless people can still be capable of incredible cruelty.
I guess she's not a perfect tragic figure, given how much suffering is shared by the entire cast, but I find her hesitation to be pretty believable.

I have yet to see Sawatari Makoto on any of these lists, slowly dieing over the course of 3ep. She then gets her only wish granted while she was too far gone to understand it and then vanishes right after. That is what tragic is all about not Izumi... They only consider it tragic because she was hot.
Even Nagato, Endless 8 anyone? It was hard enough to watch it 8 times never mind the millions of times she had to experience it.
