A newly unveiled trailer for “Final Fantasy XIV: The Fate of Eorzea,” part of the FF14 relaunch (“A Realm Reborn”) for PS3 and PC, has actually managed to secure a positive reception, prompting a certain amount of rather optimistic speculation that Square Enix may have learned its lesson…

The trailer:

Online there is optimism tinged with scepticism (or possible scepticism tinged with optimism) – not least thanks to the presence of the classic game marketing shell game of switching game and pre-rendered graphics.

FF music is one of the best during Uematsu's time.

    Nowadays, FF music are.. meh.

Uematsu actually scored most of FFXIV. Unfortunately, he's also sort of an overrated composer (not that he hasn't done some great work, but much of that was born from the limitations of early consoles). Also unfortunately, scoring a single-player RPG is vastly different from scoring an MMO... the sheer quantity of music it calls for well exceeds the capability of one overpaid composer. They would have done much better to hire a dozen low-totem composers.

The CG cutscene looks cool, I guess, but I'll need to see some actual gameplay before I decide whether I like it or not.

Kudos to the narrator for making himself sound like the biggest homo ever.

Also, where are my moogles and chocobos?

If you visit the page there is mention of moogles/chocobos so you don't have to worry about that. Also in the game alrdy you can ride chocobos and there is a fight which involves facing off against a group of moogles.

Permanent mounts or only rental only. Played FFXI for a while and really hated that you could only rent one.

Yeah he's behind the times, on a game that is like 8 years old. Meaning if they put them in 4 years ago it took them 4 years to add personal mounts. How awesome!

FF11 was a great game... played it for 5 years myself.

It was definitely a bit too hardcore for the wow-generation though.

Everything's too hardcore for the WOW-generation. Seriously, WOW is the lowest common denominator for MMORPGs, everything is taken out and nerfed until the worst newbie can do everything, given enough time and hand holding. And they automate the hand holding.

lol the easiness is why i put WOW down when i tried it out. I mean not that i enjoyed deleveling or spending hours for a few levels but it took away some of the feeling of accomplishment when you just level so easily.

If sitting around for hours doing nothing(camping HNM/forming parties) is the mark of a great game, I never want to play another great game.

The CG cutscenes for Final Fantasy games ALWAYS look good. Without knowing the actual gameplay or the storytelling or the characters, we cannot say if this game may be a step into the right direction or just another load of sparkly poo

Funny, I did just that this year. Just because something is dated doesn't mean it's bad. I would call it an EASY RPG, not a bad one.

You can badmouth Squenix for milking ancient history, but don't try to tarnish the name of a good game.

uh FFVII was a great game when it came out, comparing an old game to new games is just not doing justice. The newer games should be better. The problem is when the new games suck compared to the old games, not the other way around.

Jesus, it's all about butthurt here, isn't it?

FF7 was an average JRPG. The story itself isn't that special, but you know what? I still had fun playing it.

So, just because someone else's opinion is different from yours doesn't mean you have to bash them or try to start an argument with them.

Who cares what other people think as long as you enjoyed it, right?

The original comment is really all there is to say about XIV; we'll have to wait (again) and see. SE seems to have a "too big to fail" model for XIV though, which is almost certainly doomed to failure.

Regarding VII, it was an excellent game. The late 90's hit that sweet spot of gaming as a whole. These days everything just feels like "content" and the actual games themselves aren't very engaging. The sense of discovery is gone.

Why they can't just make a CG movies??? Like Final fantasy spirits within. They making a game with so much CG moments, that it's not hard to change all of it to the movie)))

I was a bit disappointed that the trailer was once again just CG, but to be fair, those keeping track of this game's progress have been given promises that have been met.

http://www.xivpads.com/?E32012 shows a number of improvements and changes done in the game, along with some in game screenshots and concept art. Not sure if those screenshots have ever been posted on Sankaku before, but I guess they are the real reason people are getting hyped.

    'The game worked'?

It hasn't been a full year and people already forgot the crazy amount of lag caused by the absolutely stupid programming that requires every single player action to be validated by the server?

Had no lags in beta. Managed to play for 30 minutes, then uninstalled.

actually, the game was a technical failure. it was made on the crystal engine (ffxiii). which had severe limitations as far as what a mmo platform requires. on top of that, square-enix outsourced the programming to a chinese company. all of this was covered on sankaku and other sources.

so instead of throwing the entire project away, they've rehauled it. thank god too, because ffxiv 2.0 sounds really promising (because the new producer has decided to re-do the entire game with his own vision while keeping player input in mind).

Well, it is still out-sourced; but yea, can they fix it? yes they can!
