Genius: Japan Reduces Radiation with Lead Lined Detectors

lead-lined-dosimeters.jpg

Disgust with the morally degenerate and extraordinarily dangerous antics of Japan’s nuclear power industry has reached an even greater pitch with the revelations that their novel approach to reducing the radiation exposure of clean-up workers was to line their radiation detectors with lead.

According to taped conversations provided by whistleblowers, one of the subcontractors Tokyo’s reviled nuclear power monopoly Tepco hired to clean up the fallout from its exploding reactors reduced the radiation exposure of its clean-up workers by making them wear lead-lined dosimeters.

The directive apparently came straight from their board, and was considered essential as otherwise the workers would have reached the legal limits for radiation exposure too quickly.

One director ordered a team of 10 workers to commence work with the lead shielded dosimeters, but 3 objected. The director later called a “meeting” with the holdouts, which one of them cunningly taped and much later provided to the press.

The director denies giving the orders, but several other employees affirm it was given.

Tepco’s approach to managing the disaster was apparently to subcontract out all the dirty work to a web of smaller companies, many of whom seem to have got round radiation exposure limits by simply hiring people off the street and dumping them as soon as their limit was reached, if they were lucky.

The government has said it will investigate reports of the radiation shielded radiation detectors, although somehow it seems online calls for the company’s executives to be charged with murder will not be heeded.

You forget that other countries, normal as they seem, are more prone to utter stupitidy and cruelty and get away with it simply because they have no "constitution" like here in america. The constitution guides our laws and actions and so we consider it more on every level, as compared to other countries who don't have to worry about whether or not they're violating anyones rights.

Every country has one, but most aren't like the US in the fact they kept it simple so it could evolve with age, but strict so it couldn't be loopholed (easily)

sadly our consitution rarely gets the job done in washington. all they have to do is call it a black op, sign an executive order,or outsource shadowy activity to the private sector and not oversee it. our rights are walked all over every day.

Japan has now been exposed as china quality, only better at hiding their shit.

    1. I don't have any nuclear plants in my country.
    2. There's many kind of "success" and I can tell you, there's a lot of things my country do better than yours. The US might be successful and big right now, but it's only a matter of time before it crumbles with all the bullshit going on now.

The American constitution has been violated more times than you can count, but our corrupt defense/intelligence industry relies on people either forgetting, or just never bothering to realize what's going on in the first place.

The constitution is more there for the average person to feel better knowing it's there. They let their guard down believing they don't have to worry and are protected. And like many of the comments here show, they will turn on anyone who points this out.

Fact is, the people in charge don't give a flying fuck about anyone but themselves and their friends, and the constitution can't stop them from screwing the rest of us if they feel like it.

If I recall correctly - Bush Jr called it "just a goddamned piece of paper"... and he got away with his war crimes. How many people died because of his lies and personal ambitions? That's just one example.

Exactly right. Japan's Constitution is modeled after ours, so all the rights Americans have do apply to the Japanese.

However, the Japanese are milquetoast as a people when it comes to challenging authority (for no good reason) so those constitutional guarantees mean little to nothing.

That thickness of lead would not cut it much but still this is China quality stuff.
But at least they were not smart enough to use polyethylene as lead will mostly stop gamma rays but it's not very good at stopping neutrons.

    Comment by Anonymous
    13:23 22/07/2012 # ! Neutral (0)

But neutrons will combine with anything low atomic (including the cloth around the shirt pocket) to produce gamma rays.

Hence the lead shield will totally screw up the explosure readings.

You need to take into account real life situations instead of just lab reports lah.

Holly wow. Is bad enough that they are only going to lead line the detectors..... Remember back in the days with Soviet Russia, their soldiers were covered head to toe with heavy lead armor to clean up Chernobyl......

Yes, I do remember that. Only in my version, they had no detectors or exposure tags so they didn't know what kinds of doses they were actually getting. And then years later when a good percentage of them started dying from various types of cancer...

Chernobyl was on a completely different scale, and type, where large amounts of plutonium was released. In comparison Fukushima was nothing.

Also, funny fact; many of the soldiers working on cleanup had smoke breaks when commanding officiers weren't watching.

Clever would be realizing that the dosimeters send their data wirelessly directly to the office responsible for monitoring the worker safety, and would have included GPS locations.

Not to mention there would be some guys on ground verifying you were wearing the right dosimeter.

Unfortunately, You need a wast amount of lead to safely shield you from radiation. You need several decimeter lead to get an effective protection. It's not manageable even on vehicles.

    Comment by Anonymous
    00:23 23/07/2012 # ! Neutral (0)

The lead was to prevent the meters from reaching the exposure limit faster thus leading to more work time, not to protect the people.

    Comment by Anonymous

A quick bit of research on lead poisoning just revealed that it only occurs if you breath in lead dust or swallow lead objects. Considering the radiation cleaners are actually wearing hazmat suits or the like, it's probable they won't be in that much danger (since they won't be breathing it in). Not the smartest move, but whatever.
