Kishimoto: “I Actually Wanted To Write A Ramen Manga”

Naruto mangaka Masashi Kishimoto has been busily embarrassing Narutards with his first ever TV interview, revealing that he initially planned Naruto “to be about ramen” and that “it is aimed at boys in middle school.” Paraphrasing some of his comments, he apparently wanted to write a ramen manga but this was not accepted so he decided to write a manga about not being accepted, for schoolboys and full of ninja  – and so Naruto was born:

“I initially thought I would write a story about ramen, but it wasn’t accepted.”

“The theme of ‘wanting to be accepted or recognised’ crops up a lot in my works…”

“So I thought I might do something about Japan and with ninja in it.”

“I treasure the kind of memories boys in middle school have, even if I am getting on a bit.”

“At Shonen Jump we are all rivals.”

There has been a certain amount of despair amongst Naruto fans online at him being so blunt about the manga targeting 2nd year middle school boys (not that this would surprise anyone) – in Japanese the phrase “chuu-ni-byou” (中二病), “8th grader sickness,” is actually slang for behaving in the juvenile manner expected of a knuckle-headed little 14-year-old.

So Naruto isn't a manga about ninjas, it is a manga about rejected ramen...
    NOW I understand.

And it so happens Madara is the embodiment of the Flying Spaghetti Monster trying to force his wastern tastes to all of Japan using mind control and making them eat spagetti all day long during breakfast, during work, during classes, during breaks, during lunch, during exercise, during dinner, during sex, during childbirth and on on.

So it's Ramen vs Spaghetti. No wonder I always felt hungry from reading the manga.

So by your logic dragon ball should be an anime based on food since the entire cast is named after either food or undergarments

Pain is actually an embodiment of Kishimoto himself. All the anguish he feels every time he writes Naruto, while wishing it were his true passion: Naruto ramen.

Now that i know the whole thing was about ramen, i guess i will have a little more respect for the manga, since it's not what it was intended to be.

As if it being shounen wasn't enough of a hint at it being marketed to that age group.

I don't see why this would be embarrassing info.

discriminate? Bronies are all autistic to the max, and the same for most fans of anime. I'm sure I could support that with facts, but why bother when it's a plainly obvious fact. Lack of real life social skills, the vocal cadence most nerdy kids have is consistent with those on the spectrum, and an utter lack of awareness of others intentions.

Back before the internet was a big thing, liking Batman and The Avengers, and reading their comics made you a "grown man who likes kids stuff." Now everyone shits their pants over them.

I guess pathetic guys like you, who need someone to pick on to make themselves feel big, have chosen anime fans now? The "lack of social skills" is exacerbated by people who think like you. Alienating them and forcing them to socialize only in fandom groups, how do you except them to turn out? Just because of a couple things on their list of interests, you wont let them "play with the other kids." Its your fault they turn out so eccentric.

chu ni byou is also used for anything semingly "dark" or having to do with dark force and demon in a relatively mediaval setting .
it has turned into yet another way to belittle people and their hobby ..

    (pandora's tower is considered "chuu-ni-byou" )

or acting like a know it all despite being an early teen. It just happens that ones who imitate that stuff (like Kuroneko) come off as haughty, which fits chuu ni byou.

Other signs [http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/中二病] apparently include starting to listen to Western music, claiming to like bands before they went mainstream, starting to drink coffee even though they don't like it, thinking they can do something if they just try it, getting embarrassed in front of their mothers and asking to respect their privacy... not sure of the last point. Maybe "taking an interest in history as far as society is concerned and finding America distasteful?"

There's the "evil eye" type you're talking about, who yearn for supernatural powers and stuff, but there are also a subculture-type, and a DQN-type who is antisocial and argues on message boards.

    Basically, becoming a teenager.

Kuroneko is far from the only one that says it. There were quite a few hints towards that way of thinking in Bakuman, and it's really just obvious in general. You think a lot of manga are popular simply because they end up being like that? Please. They're made to sell.

Why do you think this entire fucking season of anime is full of ecchi/moe/harems fanservice flicks? They sell.

The series is 13 years old, everyone who was in middle school reading it is an adult today and most still read it. I fail to see a problem with that...
Besides anyone can like whatever they want(and so can I), I don't really care about those "target audiences". A lot of shows choose the wrong "target" and fails miserably while others gather people from all genders/ages even when they weren't made for that.
