Haruhi has time travel and aliens. It's very much sci-fi
And both of those stemmed from the fact that Haruhi is a God.
But Time Travel and the alien presence were given mystical explanation. That makes it as much scifi as people shooting lasers from their hands.
Don't waste your breath. People will justify anything by slapping labels on them. By this logic, Madoka qualifies as sci-fi.

Shouldn't Fullmetal Alchemist be classified as fantasy?
Most of the anime here aren't classifiable as sci-fi, and at best use something vaguely connected to sci-fi works, like time travel or aliens, as a basic plot device to add some mystery or fanservice.
No, because Alchemy is actually a science. Now a days we call it Chemistry, and there's no mysticism in it.
Alchemy in FMA contradicts pretty much all science from the last few centuries. It's magic dressed up as science.

Science Fiction indicates the movie/anime/game/etc. as a possibility for realistic although scientifically not yet achievable.
Fantasy is pure fiction and cannot become reality, or at least not with the proper evolution/revolution

I sure hope your not including Gunbuster in your + list was simply by mistake. Never has doppler-shift been animated more beautifully! (The whole series is great and could easily fit in amongst classic 70s/80s Hard-SF literature like Ender's Game and Forever War)
Gundam would be up there as soon as they replace the entire cast with loli's and big breasted high school girls piloting gundams. Its a sad fucking world.
Because being properly "science fiction" instantly disqualifies you from being on this list if you aren't incredibly lucky or recent.
I dunno, the Code Geass manga didn't even have mecha. And for the most part all the scientific stuff they said was "Here's your backpack, it makes your mech fly." or "Oh, I developed this shield thingie, its hard to calculate for but I know you can do it!" or "Oh look, remote controlled mecha." and the always popular "I made this nuke thing, but instead of exploding it completely destroys matter (pseudo-science fail) to be environmentally friendly..."

Several classic real scifi anime are outside, macross series, not only frontier, Aquarion, Appleseed, argento soma, blazzreiter, RahXephon, capitain harlok, chobits (why not), chrome shelled regios ,cobra, ergo proxy etc.

While this list seems to be closer to my personal preferences than most of the Sanka's "top x" lists, am I the only one who facepalmed himself seeing that this particular list doesn't have Ergo Proxy, Texhnolyze and Cowboy Bebop in it ? And GITS:SAC is at the far place no. 21 ? O.o
Haruhi is my queen, but Stein's Gate needs some more love.

Hold up. There are a lot of fantastical elements to FMA, but alchemy itself and science are closely related. Alchemists approach their work like scientists, Automail is pretty comparable to, if not more advanced than modern prosthetic tech, and the world of fma is basically an alterenate universe where mankind's attempts at alchemy were successful, so it would it still counts as sci-fi.

It was Index listed on the Japanese version of top 10 fantasy anime but was translated to Railgun.
Whole point of Index is battle between magic(fantasy) and science(sci-fi).

Haruhi kind of parodies clubs that are about sci-fi. Haruhi is as much sci-fi as scary movie is a horrorflick.

Actually, it's espers vs magicians. The "science" parts are just to conveniently make it sound like there's more to it (ie, science vs religion). It might as well be Red vs Blue.
There is no science at all in To Aru. The so-called science is merely magic in lab coats instead of wizard dresses.
