The "crushing similarities" being that the character designer for the other anime and Kokoro Connect's original light novel happen to be the same person.
Also, anyone who has already read the light novels or manga over the past 3 years already knows the storyline. It's hardly headline news. And no, there isn't much fan service. Unless they change it.

Even if "She" hasn't had work for a while, Yukiko Horiguchi is one of the most popular character designers (currently) in the industry, not to mention she's also one of the highest payed in the industry.

You know for me it didn't really remind me of K-on at all as has been promoted by sankaku. Totally forgot about that while watching. Overall it seems ok for me. Characters are ok stories a little generic but ok. I won't be anxiously waiting the next ep, but I will watch when it comes out.
I do like the girl who I guess is supposed to be the azusa equal. She was cute I like her the best so far ^^ forget her name.

nah I'm happy to see male characters in anime. I'm tired of this girl-worship. This is the reasons girls are becoming so much more stuck up, bitchy, useless (other than sex), and annoying.
