JKs in space anime Mouretsu Pirates has ended to a surprising amount of critical praise, and evidently the producers are so confident about its prospects that they not only gave it a full two season run but also just announced a movie.
I actually found it to never really get above an "alright" level. The animation quality is pretty good, and it has an interesting premise, but the story and character development never really go anywhere.
The characters are all shallow and boring, despite being superficially varied. Throughout the entire anime, no one showed any real emotion, or acted on their own in any interesting way. There was never any sense that any of the characters were in danger either, making the handful of space battles little more than eye candy. The lead character could never do anything wrong, and the plot lacked any sort of overarching story. Even the final episode and its leadup were largely pointless.
I wouldn't say the series was outright bad, but it never really became anything more than a shallow excuse to put schoolgirls on spaceships.
When I start watching this I have mixed feelings to be honest but I continue watching as the show have some of my all time favorite voices (Seiyu) in the cast and it was enjoyable just from this fact alone, but somewhere near the middle the show start to surprise me in a good way as it become better & better until the climax where it leave me with very good impressions over all, for any1 who stop watching from the first episodes continue & u wont loose the show is really good it just start a little slow :)
stopped at ep 1 it was too damn pathetic and moe for me. Fill like anime is just cute girls doing things now instead or anime with actual story anymore.
"It was bad because it wasn't onepiece using a female cast in space".
That prettymuch sums up anyone who cried about this show, it is not a shounen battle show and for a show involving the goings on of space pirates it was very realistically paced. Things were not high action or drama all the time, but the moments where they were are quite good.
No, it was bad because it was just as random and stupid as One Piece in space, but pretended to be something more than that for half the series, then became just as dumb as One Piece in the other half.
Agreed, twas my favorite anime of the past two seasons. Can't wait for the movie, and hopefully it will be an original story and not a remake of the series.
It's because of people like you that we keep getting bad cookiecutter anime.
Mouretsu was by far the most interesting thing running this season, the subtly and expansive universe it was set it are just two of the many points where it shines.
Again, heaven forbid a studio tell a story about a pirate family and the universe they inhabitate. Do all anime need super explosions, hyper fighting, tits and ass, gallons of blood and overabundant moe to sell and/or hook an audience?
You don't see that shit in Miyazaki movies and his films top charts with every release (excepting Tales from Earthsea) This show was a breath of fresh air in the stench that is the anime we're all used to seeing studios pump out on a seasonal basis.
I for one am glad it's getting a second season and a movie, now I doubt we'll get a US release with a proper english dub, but if it were to ever happen; day one pre-order for me regardless if they decide to add special bonus items to turn it into a LE edition set.
On a related note, Tari Tari is more that just "Cure girls and nothing else." Everyone who thought Hyouka was boring have the attention span of a goldfish and more goldfish are gonan be born thanks to Tari Tari now; another great show that has more to offer than just it's looks which is all people are paying attention to.
I watch it japanese with subtitles, the rest of my family likes an english dub since were an "anime viewing family" a dub allows me to spread the anime joy with everyone. If that concept makes me lose credibility then so be it :P
You really wanna lose cred? mention you PREFER a dub over a sub, then we can talk XD
No, they're just smarter than me, who watched the whole thing because I thought it would get better than a boring "girl's first space adventure" show, only for it to go braindead in the second half for shits and giggles.
I gave it a chance at first... Then watched it to the last. It wasn't that good in general, but the references to other space pirate anime (specially Harlock) and space operas in general kept it good enough to continue.
Hope to see more before we forget about it.
This is not a bad show, but it's hard to be satisfied with a lot of the episodes. Every decision is either talked out of or brought to a peaceful resolution, and the ending leaves you with more questions than answers while the villain runs free despite having killed off countless pirates. Throughout it all Ririka is being two faced, despite her daughter being in apparent mortal peril from a deadly pirate hunter.
This post probably sounds too negative, so I'll balance it out a bit. I enjoyed it well enough to complete both seasons, but unless there's actually something at stake, I probably won't rush out to buy the Blu Ray.
Except they didn't almost verge on Nisekoi level shit. Toradora is about two messed-up kids learning what love is by making mistakes. Nisekoi is about... More
I just finished watching the series this morning. Best anime I've seen in a while. Novel premise and lots of action.

and a NINJA SPACE PIRATE for fucks sake!!!

Final episode was incredible. They went all out to give us a bad ass ending, I was happy :)
Then I'll continue watching. Hope it turns out as good as you just mentioned. :)
...Who types with their feet? Besides Radical Edward.
people born without arms, they do it daily. Among other task.
Coorie FTW!
Horie Yui FTW!
Really, I stopped watching this cheeze-fest by episode 8.
i stop at episode 2...
1...
me too... bored to death
I stopped when they started "hacking"...
More fool you, then.
looks stupid as fuck.
Didn't even watch it
Stopped at episode 5. It was so damn boring.
Same, not actually sure it was ep8, but I know it was too far. They really dropped the ball depicting Bodacious Pirates in Space.
Kuroneko was hella annoying too.
stopped at ep 1 it was too damn pathetic and moe for me. Fill like anime is just cute girls doing things now instead or anime with actual story anymore.

not my reason I just kinda liked it then forgot about it.
No, it was bad because it was just as random and stupid as One Piece in space, but pretended to be something more than that for half the series, then became just as dumb as One Piece in the other half.
Yes this is great news! love the show!
Funny. I was just fapping to this the other day.
Yup. This anime deserves to have a film. I am ready for more Marika and Chiaki!
Agreed, twas my favorite anime of the past two seasons. Can't wait for the movie, and hopefully it will be an original story and not a remake of the series.
Why? It was mostly underwhelming. It wasn outright bad, but it wasn't great either.
Well, I'd say it's kinda genderswapped Star Trek. Think about it.
You didn't watch it, did you?
You just don't see what others see in it.
Your just nit picky.
No, this show is FAR better than the Lelouch-AI-mastered some space shitty comedy...you know what I mean, right?
It's because of people like you that we keep getting bad cookiecutter anime.
Mouretsu was by far the most interesting thing running this season, the subtly and expansive universe it was set it are just two of the many points where it shines.
lol you called it the most interesting anime this season, that made me laugh.
Not many people realize it has fans that do like it.

You're whole argument and credibility went out the window when you said you wanted an English dub
lol, I agree.
What you're really saying:
Your family is too stupid to read.
Marika & Chiaki fap fap fap
People who don't even give an anime a try pisses me off, yes it was slow at first but then it got really good and ended with an excellent concept.
You people aren't even fans of anime if you only watch up to 1 or 2 episodes.
No, they're just smarter than me, who watched the whole thing because I thought it would get better than a boring "girl's first space adventure" show, only for it to go braindead in the second half for shits and giggles.
Wow, I stopped around episode 3. Wonder if its worth watching then
Best pirate anime is Still Captain Harlock <_<
dem tight spacesuits!
I gave it a chance at first... Then watched it to the last. It wasn't that good in general, but the references to other space pirate anime (specially Harlock) and space operas in general kept it good enough to continue.

Ririka two-faced? Did you even understand the last few episodes? And anyway, you can't be a space pirate if mommy has to keep saving your butt.
