Police Arrest Man for Eating 7 Cherries

cherry-theft.jpg

Police have arrested an elderly man for the heinous crime of picking 7 cherries from a tree, charging him with theft in a crime so shocking it was reported in Japan’s major newspapers and on TV.

The 66-year-old man was spotted one afternoon in Yamagata prefecture picking cherries from a tree in a field by a 64-year-old agricultural worker in a neighbouring field.

She called police, who came rushing to the scene. Upon questioning he admitted picking 7 cherries from the tree, worth a total of ¥200, and was promptly arrested for theft.

He claimed he “ate them because I was hungry.” The 69-year-old owner of the field says that “this year was a poor harvest, so each cherry is precious, but it’s also quite sad if he did this because he was hungry.”

Online there is some debate as to which is more amazing – that police went to the trouble of arresting him, that a crime of this scope found its way into the national media, that they felt the need to report his name (curiously recent cases of shoplifting teachers and police escaped this honour), or that 7 cherries cost all of ¥200.

It's so true. Cops get paid much more than the 7 cherries are worth.

See, this is what happens when you have a low violent crime rate, the police get bored and decide to dream up absurd charges to arrest people on, just so they can have something to do.

Don't worry. The rapists and paedophiles of Japan keeps the police busy...when the police aren't chasing after random males for just being in the vicinity of a female.

I live in a agricultural neighbourhood, and it is well known over here that if a farmer doesn't press charges when someone steels a few apples, soon the whole neighbourhood knows and your trees end up empty. So I understand why he pressed charges.
The price... not so much. Although maybe there's a statutory fine in there for the act of stealing as such, and let's not forget that Japan invented the luxury fruit. Imagine if you will a watermelon which is is perfectly round and utterly shiny and flawless... €30, not kidding.

"Simple. As long as you don't make a business out of the "stolen" stuff its okay."

Okay, so I break into your house, take your TV and set it up in my living room. All is good, right? I didn't sell it or anything. I'm took it for personal use.

Personally, if I had owned the cherry tree, I wouldn't have pressed charges. I think I could spare a few cherries if the guy was really that hungry.

But, theft is theft. This is one of those things that have to be black and white as far as the authorities are concerned. Otherwise you could have situations where the victim feels like he is getting screwed because the guy only took 7 cherries, not eight.

There's also the matter of, if you set hard limits on what is and what is not allowed, people will find a way to cheat the system. If 7 cherries is okay, then what's to stop the guy from taking 7 cherries from this farmer and then moving down the road and taking 7 more from another farmer?

for one, this is billions of years out and we only know so much on the subject, however, the sun contains mass regardless of which form it's in, so after it shrinks down it will become solid.
after the sun explodes (white dwarf stage) it will become a very very heavy solid possibly taking the form of a black hole, however size size of the star may have some dependance on the matter if this will even happen.
    --
basically the sun will never be like the moon, but the moon may become part of the sun... as well as everything else in this solar system...
