Police have arrested an elderly man for the heinous crime of picking 7 cherries from a tree, charging him with theft in a crime so shocking it was reported in Japan’s major newspapers and on TV.
The 66-year-old man was spotted one afternoon in Yamagata prefecture picking cherries from a tree in a field by a 64-year-old agricultural worker in a neighbouring field.
She called police, who came rushing to the scene. Upon questioning he admitted picking 7 cherries from the tree, worth a total of ¥200, and was promptly arrested for theft.
He claimed he “ate them because I was hungry.” The 69-year-old owner of the field says that “this year was a poor harvest, so each cherry is precious, but it’s also quite sad if he did this because he was hungry.”
Online there is some debate as to which is more amazing – that police went to the trouble of arresting him, that a crime of this scope found its way into the national media, that they felt the need to report his name (curiously recent cases of shoplifting teachers and police escaped this honour), or that 7 cherries cost all of ¥200.

Will Japan ever be a more normal place?
That's like asking if the sun will ever be the moon...
In theory, that will be in a few billion years once the sun is done with burning. It's possible it will have around the same texture as the moon.
Moon texture... that's cheese, right?
And how many of you actually lives in Japan?
No it's not.
Sun isn't a solid moron. Once the current nuclear reaction of its core is done, it'll evolve into a giant red, absorb Earth and shrink into a white dwarf
You're the idiot, the sun will implode after using up all it's fuel (after it expands like you said) and will cool down to become a rock.
Last time I bothered with this stuff suns could become either a giant red or a white dwarf or other awesome stuff. Dependend on how big a sun it was in the first place.
Last time I bothered with this stuff Pluto was still a planet, though.
Actually a white dwarf is solid since it's mostly carbon and iron under extreme pressure.
@21:30 > cool down to become a rock > rock > balls of burning gas > leaving behind a rock // PFFTHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
for one, this is billions of years out and we only know so much on the subject, however, the sun contains mass regardless of which form it's in, so after it shrinks down it will become solid.
after the sun explodes (white dwarf stage) it will become a very very heavy solid possibly taking the form of a black hole, however size size of the star may have some dependance on the matter if this will even happen.
--
basically the sun will never be like the moon, but the moon may become part of the sun... as well as everything else in this solar system...
D~awwwww, how cuuuuuute! Otaku trying to one-up each other with scientific knowledge! On the internet!
@21:30 - I have to get my head out of the gutter. XD

Just...what? Are you even reading the conversation?
If you don't know the difference between a solid state and a plasma state STFU.
There is normal place on earth?
There is tons of absurd things and USA and Europe too.
No kidding, it's illegal in my city for a woman to own livestock for breeding purposes without consent from her husband or lack-thereof her father.
The Sun isn't a solid. Retard.
Makes perfect sense, wouldn't want her gobbling down animal semen without her husband's consent.
19:13 is the true retard, didn't even accomplish the simple act of posting in the right subthread.
And double-idiocy to boot. Mass is mass, solid or not. Don't even bring this shit up - finish kindergarten instead.

Your the only one to go there....
it would have been more normal news if the man stole girls cherries.
being japan, that's what I expected this article to be about.
Hehehehe!!!
this is actually pretty normal, my dad's family runs a farm, and if anyone is caught tresspassing and stealing crops or blueberries, they'll most likely get shot before the police are called, which is in thier right. Thieves are thieves, but if he had asked, then there probably wouldnt have been a problem.
My grandfather owns vast lands in the province and he has henchmen armed with M4 rifles , shotguns and some grenades. It's not just for personal reasons though, groups of NPA(domestic terrorists) live closely. Went there once, it was intense. Farming is serious business.
Sankaku residents loves trolling on police for whatever reasons, so your sane and sound remark about farming doesn't work here... lol
He sounds like a nice guy if I'm ever flying over his land I'll remember to dump blue berry maggot flies that have been made tolerant to pesticide on his crops.
Hopefully they'll wipe out the crop and the bank will seize his land.
Nah it's privatly owned, no chance that will happen, and we use mesh screen to keep the bugs out, what now thieves? Yeah that shadow under the mesh is me, about to pursue my rights to shoot cherry eaters.
@Char ,I would appreciate that but too late he already passed away last month. He was a bastard and an asshole anyways. If old age doesn't get him , it's the terrorists who would.
only after total nuclear devastation
And here I read the title thinking a guy ate them when a school girl walked by.
It's a crime being born a Japanese man.
I swear, these current laws (Not just Japan, worldwide) are fucking hilarious...I don't get this shit.
So, how much is it okay to steal.
7 = ok
7,000 = not ok
Where do you draw the line? Theft if theft.
Simple. As long as you don't make a business out of the "stolen" stuff its okay.
7 or 7,000? that was a ridiculous comment, you will arrest a 64 years old man for eating those cherries because he was hungry, but when you see a Yakuza or a Yankee doing worst things than that you will let him go? yeah right...
You guys steal the cherries, then use them to grow cherry trees in your garden and proceed to share the cherries and their seed with the whole world. And nothing goes to the first poor agricultural worker.
Pirate scum.
It depends a lot on the nature, frequency, cost, and response (police) cost of the crime.
Arresting someone over eating 7 cherries is stupid is every respect.
"Simple. As long as you don't make a business out of the "stolen" stuff its okay."
Okay, so I break into your house, take your TV and set it up in my living room. All is good, right? I didn't sell it or anything. I'm took it for personal use.
Personally, if I had owned the cherry tree, I wouldn't have pressed charges. I think I could spare a few cherries if the guy was really that hungry.
But, theft is theft. This is one of those things that have to be black and white as far as the authorities are concerned. Otherwise you could have situations where the victim feels like he is getting screwed because the guy only took 7 cherries, not eight.
There's also the matter of, if you set hard limits on what is and what is not allowed, people will find a way to cheat the system. If 7 cherries is okay, then what's to stop the guy from taking 7 cherries from this farmer and then moving down the road and taking 7 more from another farmer?
but the news said HE owns the fukken field
so WTF man WTF!!
"But, theft is theft."
No, it's not. It's cherries growing on a tree. If there were TVs growing on my tree then be my guest and take one for yourself.
"then moving down the road and taking 7 more from another farmer?"
Geez, maybe he walks on to the next one to get an apple or something. Big fucking deal.
I live in a agricultural neighbourhood, and it is well known over here that if a farmer doesn't press charges when someone steels a few apples, soon the whole neighbourhood knows and your trees end up empty. So I understand why he pressed charges.
The price... not so much. Although maybe there's a statutory fine in there for the act of stealing as such, and let's not forget that Japan invented the luxury fruit. Imagine if you will a watermelon which is is perfectly round and utterly shiny and flawless... €30, not kidding.
I know how much you all *love* the Bible on here, but this was all I could think of when I saw this article:
Deut 23:24 “If you go into your neighbor's vineyard, you may eat your fill of grapes, as many as you wish, but you shall not put any in your bag."
The crazy one is actually the owner of the cherry tree. Stealing food out despair is usually only punishable if charges are pressed. Then again... This is like stealing candy at a supermarket.
Taking candy from a store is clearly stealing, as in, it is merchandise, it was brought there with the intention of being sold.
To be honest this is cleary a crime for stealing food.
But come on, 200 yen, that`s like a 2$? Is this old man perhaps a beggar?
Law is to protect the ruler class, not you. Thats why you'd feel uncomfortable, just as anyone(except ones in high class)
High price lawyers say yes to your statement.
Another raw raw raw fite da powah 10-something retard. Does it feel good to masturbate yourself into thinking you are somekind of a rebel? Grow some balls and grow the fuck up.
Its not a good thing to go around popping cherries
Lies! Popping cherries makes everyone happy!
Popping cherries warrants even less punishment there.
Japanese elderly man stealing cherries from elderly woman.
You see, the issue wasn't the cherries. The issue was that he have a penis.
and her cherries spoiled.
Tehehehe!
