SMART disk monitoring package CrystalDiskInfo’s special “Shizuku” edition has been attracting attention amongst otaku for letting cute little Shizuku watch over their disks and even offer suitably saccharine spoken warnings of impending data loss…
Shizuku:
The software is available for free download from their homepage (an English version including her is available).
For those not familiar with it, SMART – Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology – is a monitoring system built into most modern computer hard drives and SSD, which attempts to predict drive failures and (if anyone bothers to check it) provide some warning of an impending drive failure.
Research by Google suggests SMART is only rarely able to accurately predict drive failure (and in fact 36% of their drives failed without ever generating a single SMART error and 56% of failed drives showed no significant errors), so relying on SMART monitoring is no substitute for a proper backup regime – although it may just provide a fine excuse to install Shizuku.

O[]o....
I wants it...
Her water-orb is cute. Like a gentle kiss! :X
I'm going to install this when I get a new PC.
Pathetic fags.
Whoa, she's so damn stunning!
Traditional + Moe = WIN!!!
just think if all your programs had something like this.
I just use Acronis and PerfectDisk. Never had any problems.
That's backup and defrag - this is diagnostic.
I used to use those both, but now I use EASEUS and Auslogics... hard to say why I switched though - they're all good products. Still, it's worthwhile to scan your disk for errors.
A while back, I ran a backup of one disk, but I didn't have enough room for two backups so I deleted the older one. While running the new one, I realized my disk was failing. -_-; I ended up with a backup of a partly-failed disk and lost some files. Lesson learned - caution (and big external disks!) are cheap. Data is not.
If you just wanna read the SMART datas, PerfectDisk can already do that for you. Also HD Tune Pro.
But do they include a cute loli mascot?
Not so interested in knowing how many disk failures SMART fails to detect as much as I'm wondering how many drives had significant SMART errors that went on to fail shortly thereafter. Currently all my drive failures are surprises. If I get that down to "some of my drive failures are surprises", I will be coming out ahead. And the cute app is a bonus!
You shouldn't rely on SMART to tell you when your disk is about to fail, because, as the article suggests, disks can suddenly die without a warning and with little hope of recovery.
SMART warnings are merely an indication that you should be replacing the disk before it starts acting erratic.
Forget about SMART and get a RAID.
Repeat after me kids "RAID is not a backup scheme".
SMART isn't even an actual thing, so go and tell that to your kids.
RAID is not backup (well, RAID 1 pretty much is)! RAID systems can provide data loss protection, but the most secure method of protecting your data is to wear a condom! Erm, to back up your data!
If nothing else, you can RMA a drive if it throws SMART errors. So it is one extra ball in your court, in terms of getting the most out of your drive.
Your *data* has nothing to do with SMART and the errors it reports.
Always assume that any storage device will fail at any time without warning. If your data is worth more than the hassle, always have offsite backups.
You can tell that from the numbers in the article with just a bit of calculation
100% = Total population of decommissioned drives.
36% = Died without any SMART error.
36% = Died with no significant error.
28% = Died with SMART error.
Hence, SMART is a waste of time and effort. The reason behind this is that we know next to nothing about how and why hard drives fail; it's just not studied under realistic use scenarios. Furthermore, the little we do know suggests that the processes that make drives fail are highly stochastic and unless we can redesign drives to eliminate that we will never be able to predict drive failure.
If your data is important to you, what you should be doing is back it up, and protect your backups with QuickPar.
She's too cute, I'm giving it a try.
Moe marketing on a fail product, no thanks...
You cannot into nice things.
stfu, u fucking gay
stfu, learn to have some taste in things that aren't underage and have normal eyes.
How about no?
I'll let her hang around my PC for a while. After that, well I'm not so into it.
Well, i don't really give a fuck about that
(¬_¬)
======
i bet u like program with man full of muscle crawling in ur desktop more
Why did you even respond if you don't care?
>I don't really
Elf's KoiHime is here.
Isn't tracking hardware diagnostic stats something the OS should be doing? Doesn't Windows include a SMART monitoring utility?
Pfft, Windows, including something smart? (see what i did there?)
No OS has SMART software by default, unless you make a Unix-based OS with one.
Debian, RedHat and Ubuntu certainly do. Many other Linux based desktop OSes probably come with one.
I'm fairly certain that OSX includes one as well, although I don't own any Macs so don't take my world on that.
Windows 7 does have a SMART monitoring component built in. I know that for a fact since it warned me once with one of those typical Aero system message boxes when one of my discs indicated an impending failure (it turned out to be a false-positive though, but that's due to SMART's inadequacy and not Windows' fault).
Forget hardware diagnostic, cute little girls should be included by default in every OS.
Well I have a smart program already but I don't have one with a cute girl with it. Time to change that plus never hurts to have a second opinion
She's such a sweetie!
So someone finally put PapaKiki's Hina into a PC...
Why not?
A long time I expect to see good avatars on desktops, some useful not only to see hours or stay dancing and making striptease ..
A way too moe, you know that screwed with your HD.
Like taking a bullet or be kicked with a smile?! :P
Wow the voice of Hina from PapaKiki. DO want.
She also did the voice of that NEET loli from Idolmaster: Cinderella Girls :D
Also Chouhi(Quite forgot the name) from Shocking Pink Hentai. Shocking indeed.
Do you know? Never forget Oni-chichi : Reborn!
This is must be application for your Harddisk.
Well, right now there's no better system than S.M.A.R.T. to guard your PC storage
