Nintendo Unveils 3DS XL

3ds-xl.jpg

Nintendo has announced its new model 3DS XL, boasting a bigger screen, chunkier console and heavier weight – barely a week after Miyamoto had apparently been insisting that no such console existed.

The 3DS XL (or “LL” in Japan, just to keep things confusing) is due August 19th in the US and July 28th in Japan, for $199 and ¥18900, respectively.

The main distinguishing features are that it is bigger:

It is in fact 46% bigger: 93mm x 156mm x 22m, compared to the 3DS’s 74mm x 134mm x 21mm

This brings a screen increased in size by “90%” (4.88″ & 4.18″ vs 3.53″ & 3.02″)

Less helpfully, it also weighs much more, at 336g to the original’s 235g

Battery life for 3DS titles is increased by a moderately unimpressive 30-90 minutes – 3.5-6.5 hours vs 3-5 hours

The video:

Displaying the usual total lack of straightforwardness consumers have unfortunately had to come to expect from big gaming companies, only on June 12th was Nintendo’s boss quoted lying through his teeth by saying there would likely be no revised 3DS and Nintendo would instead release a next generation portable later:

“I really feel like I’m satisfied with the 3DS hardware as it is. I feel like it’s the best for this generation. What we’re thinking about right now is probably going to be for a future generation of handheld.”

I bet this move was made so soon by Ninty because games on the 3DS were running on less than 320x240 resolution compared to the PSVita's 960x544.
Their fanbase will eat this up for sure.

    Comment by Anonymous

I doubt they introduced a new product because a competing product had a higher resolution.

Why else? I doubt there was any demand for 3DS XL at all, seeing how badly DSi XL did everywhere in the world.

Less than 320x240? LOL. Try 400x240 plus 400x240 (two images for 3D) plus exactly 320x240 (bottom screen).

Also, what are you even saying? You think that this new 3DS model increases the screen resolution? Are you really that stupid or are you just trolling?

    Comment by Anonymous

I never said that. My point is that the average joe will now believe that the 3DS LL which has a larger screen, has more screen size to offer. Simple. If you cant understand that, I don't even want to go on any longer.

That applies only to you Nintendofag.

What part of bigger screen don't you get you whiny little bitch?

    Bigger TV = better right?
Why cant you apply the same logic here?

If TV A is 1080p but in 32 inches and TV B is 1080p but in 52 inches, which of these TVs would be more attractive to consumers?

    Now STFU please.

You keep rambling with your irrelevant bullshit. You're paranoid with your alleged reasons why they're coming out with a bigger model. This is the same situation as the DSi XL. Nobody was thinking up conspiracy theories then, and nobody's doing it now. Except for you.

What? That doesn't make since at all!
It's still the 3DS and it is still going to be running under the Vita. (and still beat it in sales) People were complaining about it being so small so they made a bigger one and will still sell the original.

I don't get why they are playing this with a negative spin.

Then the linear size increase is less than 40%. You gotta love how they quoted the area figure just because it's bigger, even though figures like how far away you can hold the console, how hard it is to see detail, and so on, are all dependent on the linear figure.

    Comment by Anonymous
    22:14 22/06/2012 # ! Good (+0.8)

"How far away you can hold the console"? It's a handheld, dumbass. You're going to be holding it the same distance. Area is the correct comparison.

    Comment by Anonymous
    22:28 22/06/2012 # ! Neutral (0)

Screen resolution won't change. Only the pixel size changes making image aliasing more obvious and thus requiring you to hold it farther if seeing apparent pixels disturbs you (Just like if you atempted to zoom in a pixel-art image). So i'd say it's mainly for people with bad vision.

    22:49 22/06/2012 # ! Neutral (0)

Yeah, now it totally makes sense. They increased the screen size so people would have to hold their 3DS XL's farther away from their faces just so they don't have to look at all the awful pixels.

Not only did they NOT add a second joystick, but they fucked up the ability to use existing circle pads for dual joysticks by making it wider. Fair play, Nintendo. Make us buy MORE shit that's only compatible with one kind of unit.

no second stick is huge fail

Why the hell would they do that when there's like 2 games or something that use it.

    Comment by Anonymous
    04:44 23/06/2012 # ! Neutral (0)

There's only 2 games that use it because the 2nd stick is an overpriced, badly designed optional accessory nobody wants to buy. If it was built into the console it'd give devs a reason to make use of it.

    Comment by Anonymous

And then 18 million original 3DS owners would be forced to buy this "badly designed optional accessory" because so many games are coming out that require it, because they just had to make a second analogue pad standard on the next 3DS. Nice going bro.

Devs should stick to the touchscreen for secondary analogue control, which is 100x more accurate than an analogue stick.

    @6:40
Yeah, let's use the touch screen for secondary analogue control and obstruct 50% of the bottom screen with our hand/stylus while we try to maneuver around. Sure is accurate, for Cooking Mama games maybe.

    16:58

    That's hilarious.

This should be obvious to anyone with half a brain, but I guess I need to tell you: in games that use the touchscreen for aiming/camera controls, the TOP screen is the game screen, and remains unobscured. The bottom screen is devoted to aiming, and has a few buttons to the side (programmed not to activate unless you're purposely tapping them). It works perfectly.

It's idiots like you who force companies to take decisions they normally wouldn't. Please just shut the hell up, people like you are ruining the entire games industry with your stupidity.

That depends on whether game developers decide to take advantage of a feature only a tiny percent of all 3DS owners can use.

God you people are stupid. They increase the screen resolution, they have to increase the processing power. Then they have to figure something out to upscale older games properly, but this isn't going to work well, especially for 2D games, so instead they would just have to stretch the image out like they did with the DS backward compatibility.

Then it also creates compatibility issues with new games being unable to be played on old 3DS models. It's not gonna happen, and it's hilarious how some people keep insisting that it should.

Well then when the fuck are they supposed to do a redesign, in your opinion?

What if they had announced it next year? There would still be people who'd be like "oh no I've been waiting for a redesign all this time and now I bought a 3DS and they come out with a new one". It's stupid.

Besides, this is not like a DS Lite, it's like a DSi XL. Look at the size of that thing, it's huge. Not everyone would want that. It's an alternative option, not a replacement.

    Stop crying and bitching.

It's common practice for Nintendo outright lie about a project that's in-development or a supposed gameplay secret or glitch. Get used to it. At least they haven't pulled any fast ones on paid DLC/paying-for-content-already-on-the-disc yet.

    18:37 24/06/2012 # ! Neutral (0)

This isn't really a "revision" of the 3DS though, as it's not meant to replace the existing model. This is an alternate version of the handheld for those willing to trade portability for larger screens. Aside from that, it's pretty much identical to the standard 3DS feature-wise. Most people will still be inclined to purchase the lighter, more compact model.

I do expect Nintendo to eventually release an updated 3DS though. Going by their comments, it will probably have additional features, much like what the DSi was to the DS. Not really a "next generation" handheld, but a "new generation" of the existing platform.

Not that it's that upsetting. I'd also be waiting to see how well it does in reviews of the system. What exactly would the bigger screen do to the graphics? Would they still look fine?

Seriously? Did no one at all expected this? Here's the irony, those brandishing themselves are "hardcore" (lol) gamers should have predicted this. Nintendo has always been consistent with it's redesigns of handhelds. Anyone who's actually been gaming before the PS2 would realize this. Did the Bush era hit intelligence that hard?

Oh and some of you really have poor comprehension prowess. Shigi didn't lie. The hardware is the bloody same, the only thing that's different is that it got upscaled. So the 3DS is in fact...still a 3DS in most aspect apart from size. Shigi is happy about the 3DS as is. All he did was extend a little battery life and enlarged it. Just an alternative for consumers. You'd be in denial if you believe no one wanted a larger 3DS...well there they have it. A larger 3DS. The people complaining and whining about this is like whining about having Drink Size's at McDonalds. You usually get a Medium Coke and then complain about the new Large Coke available. It's still bloody Coke inside just more of it. So of course it's gonna take up more space and weigh more. It's just another option not a brand spanking new drink only available in large.

IF they added more applications unique to device, new chip and extended it's power output via graphics or implement a second analog. Then that's a whole new machine. Which this isn't.

You fanboys really are grabbing at straws to placate to your ego for owning another handheld/console that's different. If you're going to complain, complain about valid reasons like making handhelds region freaking locked.
