Final Fantasy fans desperately hoping for a long-awaited remake of Final Fantasy VII have been brutally disappointed to learn that leaked news of a PC version points only to a straight port, without any significant enhancements, prompting many to wonder just what Square Enix is thinking…

The leaked text, apparently accidentally made public on and then swiftly removed, refers to a supposed Steam edition:

Square Enix for its part has declined to comment on the matter, although a variety of evidence suggests it is reasonably credible.

As the game is already the subject of a great deal of PC-based modding and emulation action (shown), a simple port of ancient classic with the addition of trophies and cheats may not be quite the cash-cow Square Enix hopes for – although amongst some fans there is the suspicion that Square Enix is currently in no condition to do a remake justice in any case.
