China Menaced by Exploding China

A man has had his fingers blown off by an exploding “China” brand cigarette, providing the latest evidence of the explosive growth in Chinese product quality.
The Zhejiang province grocer lit up only to have the cigarette explode in his fingers.
Pictures show the man hospitalised with severe injuries to his fingers, with some reports saying his fingers were “blown off” by the force of the explosion.
As a supposed luxury brand, just how the cigarettes attained their explosive properties is not known (similar incidents with cheaper brands now scarcely warrant mention). Authorities are said to be investigating.

For I minute I though they were talking about exploding porcelain.

Well, dishes do explode if you constantly put boiling hot and icy cold liquids in them, one after another, for awhile. The tensions in the ceramic snap, and you get lots of shards sprinkled around.

Impurities combust at high temperatures, creating air pockets that pop. There were reports of firecracker cigarettes here in the States too. Nothing extraordinary.
As for exploding porcelain... When I worked summer job at this restaurant years ago, stacks of plates exploded in the washer. It was strong enough to blow the lid open, spew shards all over, and shut the place down. Sounded like a gunshot had gone off out back. No one was hurt though. They said it had something to do with the new batch not responding well to the drying cycle.
a REALLY faulty batch... if the company that makes them skimped on some of the chemicals during the process of mkaing them, internal pressure and tension in the china can accumulate. this is sped up by the continious heating (thus expanding) and cooling down of these plates...
in the worst case scenario, this plate could have exploded when is was served to a guest...
I thought the country China exploded.

Could have been worse he's lucky he didn't have it in his mouth when it exploded.
Dunno, his face looks a little singed (mainly around his lips/under his nose). Considering how cigs are lit, I'd say there's a good chance he did have it near his face and it just wasn't blown off cause his fingers took the brunt of the explosion.
Now those Bugs Bunny cartoons won't be so funny to this guy.
In China they put powder to everything.
Smoking kills... albeit I do admit didn't think quite so quickly. I suppose that may be one way to discourage smoking. Probably not though
