Technology which allows a virtual avatar to mirror the facial expressions of a user using only a webcam has lately been making an impression on gamers – as has the fact that the Japanese researchers who developed it naturally saw fit to immediately employ it in mapping themselves to none other than virtual angel Hatsune Miku…

Although Miku fans are naturally more than a little excited, the real impact is sure to be on MMORPGs and other multiplayer titles – promising as it does a great leap forward in how well gamers can expect to interact with creepy guys pretending to be cute girls…

everyone and their mother who works in the industry has already heard about this tech since ten years ago - they just know it would be too much lag to put it in their games and it would be pointless to do so anyways because facial expressions don't sell games - since you'll need to scroll out most of the time to play games that aren't *cough* eroge *cough*
It mimics facial expressions not facial features. It wont replicate rinkles and a beard. And even if the voice on the other side is feminine, could be a 40+ mature/old woman and not a teenager. Oh right, there are no woman on the intertubes, just men.
There already is a similar feature in EQ2, though I have no idea how good it is.

Actually there are many of algorithms for this. And sources as well. I think they not made it by themself, because it's quite easy and many researches was made last 10-20 years. You have to lurk MATLAB sources, I saw some related before.
The trick is it's being done in real time. There's some serious optimization going on here.

our computer speed picked up enough for it to run it and i guess the main thing they have to worry about is debugging

I'm pretty sure my Logitech cam has been doing this for a while now, though mostly limited to the default avatars they provide me. I believe I saw a "Make new facemask" button somewhere.
And to clarify, I don't mean haveing your eyes and mouth shown on top of a 2D image. I mean having the camera track your face and turn it into a real-time 3D avatar.
