The assimilation theory is only half true, but it wasn't mongolians (although genghis khan and decendents ruled at some point) , it was Manchus. And low and behold, the dominant language of China today, Mandarin Chinese, is in fact not a 'dialect' of Chinese, but a Manchu-Chinese hybrid language. So I'd say the manchu's left their fucking mark pretty good, considering the decendent of their language is being forced on all Chinese, while authentic Chinese languages are being reclassified as "dialects".

China was in the middle of a civil war, when the Japanese were invading, China was not only fighting the old Qing Dynasty, for the Republic of China, it was also fighting the Communists led by Mao.

Japan Could invade, Because Chen Kai Shek, would not divert his military forces to forcing the Japanese out of China's Land instead of Trying to Kill Mao Ze Dong.

Also Mandarin maybe the official Language, But China still has large majority of Cantonese Speakers, It was actually voted in the National Congress, to Decide which would be adopted.

Also whether or not the Senkaku Island will be sorted out will depend on two things, Either one of either nation just gives in. Or they share. War will never happen, No matter how many skirmishes happen.

I reckon its more ideal if Japan and China just work together to mine the resources there, Considering that is probably one of the reasons. If not they should set up a mutual fishing dock or trading post. I know it sounds Idealistic, But the two nations have to start somewhere to improve their relationship, War will not go anywhere, and In the end no one will benefit. As the Economy will cost us all.

First of all it's not a defeat. Millions were massacred but China won in the end. Being mired in a civil war at the time of Japan's invasion was not an excuse, it's a fact.

Chiang Kai-shek knew he wouldn't be able to stand a japanese invasion with the state china was in and the fact he had communist infighting to attend to, that's why he made appeals to the league of nations which by the way didn't do shit for him with the appeasement policies of back then.
And your 'territory for time' was a strategy that actually worked in bogging down japanese supplies and garrisoning in north china.

Except if WWII ended with the Axis powers winning, we'd have a totally different conception of who the "bullies" and "victims" are - not saying Nazis weren't evil bastards and didn't commit all the atrocities we know, but war is just pure fuckup for all sides; we dropped nukes, Japan did massacres and Germans persecuted Jews - the rights and wrongs only make sense to you when they get composed afterwards in peacetime textbooks. It's exactly why we need the UN today: to make nations realize we coexist in an international society, and mindlessly branding other political forces as enemies is just dumb, especially in age-old territorial disputes in East Asia. Ishihara is obviously provoking nationalist sentiments on both sides and too stupid to realize the consequences, and probably counting on America to come save his ass if things go wrong; this is exactly why saner people in Japan hate him.
