I have to say, I had my doubts about this one. I mean come on, they're doin' Lovecraft dirty.
Then Nyaruko's personality amused me beyond anything I could have ever predicted.
So I gotta say, this anime's pretty good for what it is. Many will agree and many will disagree. It's all about taste in my opinion.
But this dude's still probably one of the biggest anime pricks I've ever seen in a romance comedy. Honestly, forks? Classy.
Yeah... Mahiro is pretty much the biggest problem in enjoying this anime. I have always thought the better the main character, the better the series, and vice versa. ESPECIALLY in harem

That's not a slight against the series, but it does show that these jokes have been used before, and better.
A parody of what? Just because it uses some elements that have been used in other anime before it came out doesn't make it a parody. That would be like calling Eva and Cowboy Bebop parodies.
The movie they made may count as a parody (including but not limited to Mikuru's desu eyes), but the series itself isn't.

Quicker version: it's parody of sci-fi, mystery nad horror genres. Haruhi always takes seriously certain genre logic and than stuff happens. Like in "Lone island syndrome", or with her believing that every transfer student is mysterious.
It's a parody of all that is stagnant within otaku culture. And therein lies it's genius. Not that Tanagawa's a bad writer, but still.
High school does not normally lead to meeting aliens, rocking out in bunny girl suits or saving the world. These ideas are absurd. The only way they could possibly be related to reality is if someone dangerously deluded and enthusiastic were in charge of creating that reality.
With Melancholy, the writer is sticking his tongue out at all the offkilter metafiction Japan is plagued by. And like the best satirists, he's doing it with a smile.

Haruhi always goes with logic and thanks to her being herself things get quickly out of hand.
So yeah, Tex_Arcana got it right. Parody is rather subtle (considering nowadays Hollywood overblown standards), so some people won't get it.
To make things even funnier, some people believes that Lovecraft himself parodied horror genre. Well, ther is lot of references in his mitology to his pen-pals and favourite authors, sometimes he makes jabs at them - but it's so subtle and you need so much knowledge to get it that for most of us his inner jokes are completely incomprehensible. It's my literature proffesor who told me about this.
