Japan’s creepy otaku have earned even more notoriety with the invention of “dakimakura nyotaimori,” with the inventor demonstrating the practice by eating sushi off his Lynette Bishop dakimakura cover for the full “Nyotaimori Witches” experience.
The combination of nyotaimori – “naked sushi,” a supposedly traditional Japanese culinary art (in fact it appears to have been invented or popularised overseas) – and the otaku favourite of a sexy 2D girl on a dakmakura cover appears to be completely novel.

Whether the practice will catch on is difficult to predict (though even less appealing practices already have plenty of traction), but it certainly seems unlikely to improve the reputation of dakimakura owners, such as it is.

I wouldn’t try that. Not because I’m a girl, but because sushi is delicate to begin with. I’d feel safer /not/ putting it on random objects and then eating it.
one thing i’ve noticed about white people who come over to japan is, they think it’s supposed to be some sort of luxury food or something.

exactly. a couple things i noticed when i had sushi in america:
-everyone eats with chopsticks (you eat with your hands)
-the wasabi looks like playdough and tastes completely different (real wasabi tastes sort of sweet)
I live in Japan and have since 2004… perhaps you & I go to different sushi restaurants but I RARELY (and by that, I mean less than once per year) see a person eating sushi with his/her fingers.
Seems that there’s a PORTION of the population that eat sushi with their fingers, but it’s still split 50/50, so to comment that “I’m aghast that people in ‘merika eat sushi with chopsticks, how silly!”, better have a look around outside of your station’s area first.
More and more people these days are eating sushi with chopsticks in Japan (sushi isn’t that popular in Japan compared to other really popular foods like curry, so some people just don’t care), but if you’re seeing more people with chopsticks than hands, you really might be in the wrong country.

the wasabi they use in most western sushi restaurants isn’t actually wasabi, but just american horseradish with green food coloring.
and agreed, what’s the point of even trying to make a replacement if it’s gonna taste nothing like it. japanese wasabi isn’t even really spicy (japanese people hate spicy foods…)

It’s not a lingering spiciness where you’re fanning your tongue for awhile after you eat. With wasabi it’s a flash spiciness that inflames your nasal tract and then goes away just as quickly.
Eat Sushi with your hands? Hahah sorry but the Japanese eat it with Chopsticks, it’s the American long rolled fast foody ones that you eat with your hands.

I’ve never seen a kaitenzushi place where I lived in America. I live in Japan now, kaitenzushi places are here in my town and there’s also fancier places, but at the kaitenzushi place at least they eat with chopsticks. I’ll probably go to the other this week.
LOL the four sushi places in my (american) city are ALL conveyer belt sushi. i think it’s the only concept of sushi that americans have.
