The accidental popularity of Hatsune Miku’s Mikudayo-san persona has been making massive inroads online – with fans fascinated with both her classic kigurumi creepiness and what remains of her famed cuteness.
For those not familiar with her, Mikudayo (ミクダヨー – “It’s Miku!”) is the kigurumi (character suit) version of Nendoroid Miku, famed for her idiosyncratic looks, and apparently inhabited by a Sega project manager.
She first made her appearance at Sega’s booth at the 2011 Tokyo Game Show, and her despair inducing presence was soon a hit online. Later appearances in Akiba and on NicoNico Douga only cemented her popularity (or notoriety).
2chan (that is to say, Futaba Channel, the image board 4chan is a clone of, as opposed to 2ch – 2channel proper – which is an atrociously primitive BBS with no image capabilities) was where her “Mikudayo” name stuck, and soon began morbidly churning out Photoshops of her:
