It's wrong! Madoka shouldn't be viewed by kids (say anyone under 12). I feel bad for any parents who misinterpret it for a family show.
Why not? I've watched horror and violent movies since early childhood (think preschool) and it wasn't that bad. Madoka is pretty tame in comparison.
Overprotective parenting is worse than what you are trying to protect from. Kids are more resilient than people give them credit.

No, it means we don't know what goes on behind the scenes. There's more to making deals than popularity. Licensing disagreements, marketing issues, etc...
K-ON hardly had the kind of individuality in design that Madoka easily offers to derivative plushies and other merchandise meant for a larger (young, non-otaku) audience, like the photo above demonstrates.
