Titanic II = “Made in China”

A plan to make a copy of the Titanic in China has been attracting considerable attention, combining as it does the hubris of the “Titanic” name and the manufacturing quality of China.
The ship, dubbed “Titanic II,” was commissioned by billionaire Austrialian mining magnate Chris Palmer, whose recent plans include such modest enterprises as running for office and starting a luxury cruise line and resort empire.
The plan is for the Titanic II to replicate the look and feel of the original Titanic, whilst incorporating modern innovations in unsinkability and China’s low cost shipbuilding talent.
Naturally Palmer was asked about how unsinkable it would be:
“Of course it will sink if you put a hole in it. It is going to be designed so it won’t sink, but, of course, if you are superstitious like you are, you never know what could happen.”
A Chinese shipyard took the order, thought in part to be due to Palmer’s business connections with China. How much he is paying for the vessel has not been made public.
The ship is scheduled to make its maiden voyage from London to New York in 2016.
Online there are fears it may both explode and sink:
“So this time it will explode and then sink?”

The chinese shipbuilders will put a giant 20 metre rubber barrier around the ship's belly from the waterline from bow to stern, so it will be iceburg proof.

I'm glad that only in the 'online reactions' box and not here in the comments they mention 'design flaws'.
After all, had they not noticed the iceberg and made a frontal collision the ship wouldn't have sunk as per intention.
Along with other faults the fact that they scraped against the iceberg and opened compartment 1 through 6 to sea water and that the doors of compartment 7 through 8 or 9 wouldn't close caused the Titanic to sink.
Titanic also had an undersized rudder, bad quality steel which was bolted in a way that it became brittle in the cold temperatures of the northern waters, which partially caused the severity of the collision. But, you're right that straight on collision would not have sunk the ship.
But then again, they say they're gonna upgrade most of it... In china style.

One of flaws of the original Titanic it was built of steel with a high sulfur content which caused brittleness in cold water.
Chinese steel generally has a high sulfur content due to poor QM and use of coke "not the stuff you drink" made from high sulfur coal.
I can't believe he wants to use a state owned Chinese contractor to build a ship that had a few design flaws to start with.
Really anyone with some sense would have the Dutch,Finnish, or Koreans build the vessel and let them make whatever internal changes necessary to meet modern safety standards.

Oh that note, it was mentioned in another article on this, that the rate of major incidents/sinkings of large ocean liners built in China is far lower than those of both Australia and U.S. Fleet of the former is newer though, so may they sink someday...
Sadly, biggest Finnish docks are now mounted down because lack of new ship building orders recently. Masa Dwarfs has built many ships bigger than Titanic.
But i think Chinese will do a good job if they are reasonably paid.
true, they build shit to specifications, you pay them 10 million, they will make it and it will cost 10 million, you pay them 100 million, and if they arent corrupt, they will spend that 100 million on better shit.

Hyundai ship yards has considerable experience at constructing large vessels probably more so then anyone in China.
Though the best contractors for a cruise ship would be a company like Fincantieri in Italy or STX in Finland.
A modern cruise ship internally is a very different beast then a oil tanker or container ship.
I'm not even sure if China has the facilities and technology to build a modern cruise ship.
Cargo vessels tend to have one or two very large engines with direct drive while cruise ships tend to have three to six or more diesel electric generators and electric azipod drives.

One of my contacts - who currently works for a certain offshore drilling company that recently had one of their ships boarded by none other than Xena - says that one of the brand-new, high-tech Globetrotter-class drillships they ordered was so screwy that she spent six months laid up in Holland.
If I'm not mistaken, the contract was with Huisman and the ship was constructed at STX's new Dalian facility in China, which opened in 2009. A Korean company with a good reputation opening a Chinese branch? What the hell were they thinking? That they'd attract clients looking to shave a buck or two off the purchase price of a half-billion dollar ship?
There was sandblasting grit and welding slag in the plumbing and lube oil pumps and compressors all over the vessel. A number of these pumps had water and dirt in the bearings where there was supposed to be oil. There were piping system breakages due to faulty pipe hangers, as well.
There were a couple main engine failures, probably because the lube oil pumps were so screwed up. Of course, it could just be because the eight main engines were built by Caterpillar; should have gone with MTU, GE, or basically anything but CATs.
There were tons of technical problems with the engineering of the vessel. They had to use portable air compressors on the deck to substitute for the non-functional ones installed on the vessel, just so it could reach the Netherlands.
I wouldn't touch this forthcoming Titanic replica with a ten-foot pole, let alone board the thing. I'd hate to be one of the engineers hired to crew this monstrosity, or one of those foolish enough to actually pay the fare to ride it.
Chinese products absolutely suck ass. It's not just a stereotype. It's the whole damned truth. Their manufacturing companies are a bunch of con artists, fattening their pockets while the rest of the globe sucks wind. Their under-trained, underpaid employees can't even afford to buy the things they make with their own two hands. It's nauseating.
