The tragic devastation suffered by a bus carrying nearly 50 people to Tokyo Disneyland as it was sheared in two by a collision with an ill-placed concrete wall has aroused astonishment that as few as 7 people died.
The accident took place on a stretch of Gunma prefecture highway when a night bus on its way to Tokyo Disneyland collided head-on with a concrete “soundproofing” wall, which sliced through the length of the bus, destroying it totally.
Of the 45 passengers, 7 died with a further 38 injured, along with the driver. 2 of the injured are in critical condition. 6 of the dead were women in their early twenties, along with a middle-aged man. Amongst the injured were a 10-year-old boy and a 14-year-old girl.
Police have launched a manslaughter investigation, suspecting that the driver may be largely at fault and concerned about the company’s late-night schedules which apparently did not include any change-over drivers.
However, concerns have also been voiced about the wall itself – described by some as “surely put there just to kill people” – although the driver’s confession that “I nodded off for a bit” suggests that negligence, poor road design and extreme bad luck may all be at fault.

shouldn't the wall be designed to have its ends curved at the edges instead of having them be straight.like metal guardrails that eases into the wall. either that or something on the ends that crumples on impact, stopping any vehicles that go into it but doesn't wildly bounce them back into traffic.

Yes the wall is of a flawed design the ones here in the US have that curved section you are describing and sometimes also an energy absorbing crush section.

But even if it's the fault of the driver. I think most the blame can be placed on the company for not ending his shift so he can sleep. So I think it goes maybe 40/60.
I'm not sure about Japan but in the US if the hours of service rules have been violated the blame falls to the company for over working the drivers.

I saw this on TV yesterday. According to the NHK reporter, the bus driver was forced to take the second shift because no one was available, despite his already long shift. It's funny because my wife and I both predicted that they would blame the bus driver and not the company. You just wait, we also predict that the bus driver's family will have to pay for the damages and money to the victim's family.

ill placed? at the edge of the roadway, in-line with the guardrail ON A BRIDGE? what were they thinking? after all, busses should totally drive half on and half off the roadway 40 feet in the air, this is common knowledge. its not like the wall was in the middle of the road, or even between lanes. it didn't run out into the roadway.
talk about scapegoating. driver fell asleep at the wheel and plowed into a stationary object that defined the edge of the roadway. pretty clear cut just looking at the pictures.

Which is uncalled for since there is actually a lull in road deaths in Japan. It's now at about the same level as Europe or America but sixty years ago it was a lot worse.
No sense in panicking just because some immoral boss forced a weak-willed or penniless underling to sleep-drive.
I predict the company will escape all charges, while the driver will be forced to voluntarily resign and then maybe get thrown in the slammer for a while.
