7 Die in Bus Smash – “How Did Anyone Survive That!?”

The tragic devastation suffered by a bus carrying nearly 50 people to Tokyo Disneyland as it was sheared in two by a collision with an ill-placed concrete wall has aroused astonishment that as few as 7 people died.

The accident took place on a stretch of Gunma prefecture highway when a night bus on its way to Tokyo Disneyland collided head-on with a concrete “soundproofing” wall, which sliced through the length of the bus, destroying it totally.

Of the 45 passengers, 7 died with a further 38 injured, along with the driver. 2 of the injured are in critical condition. 6 of the dead were women in their early twenties, along with a middle-aged man. Amongst the injured were a 10-year-old boy and a 14-year-old girl.

Police have launched a manslaughter investigation, suspecting that the driver may be largely at fault and concerned about the company’s late-night schedules which apparently did not include any change-over drivers.

However, concerns have also been voiced about the wall itself – described by some as “surely put there just to kill people” – although the driver’s confession that “I nodded off for a bit” suggests that negligence, poor road design and extreme bad luck may all be at fault.

The scale of the devastation suffered by the bus has been the subject of ghastly fascination online, with there being some surprise that anyone survived at all:

Coming not long after an an epileptic man ran down 10 people in Kyoto, killing himself and 7 people in what was either an epilepsy attack, a horrendous accident or a murder-suicide, and another accident, again in Kyoto, in which an unlicensed and sleep-deprived 18-year-old youth crashed into a bus carrying 10 elementary schoolers, killing 2, there is a certain amount of concern about the safety of Japan’s roads of late.

Huh, I thought the wall is there to stop cars from falling down the bridge?

He'll blame it on otakus who made the road and led the bus to the wall.

Well, it did sorta prevented the bus from straightly falling down to the road below hence killing at least 90% of the passengers inside. Things can actually be worse; I remembered one case on local news where the contractors were too cheap and slow to build proper guardrails that they just put cement blocks at the sides of the flyover.

If the driver would drive on the fucking *road*, as s/he is supposed to ... things would be fine.

I envision a mob of mindless safety-ninnies shouting, "Tear Down The Wall! Tear Down The Wall! Think of the children! Safety First!" etc.

Next items to be removed as "potential traffic safety hazards":

    o Overpass support columns
    o Trees
    o Power/light/phone poles
    o Parked cars
    o Buildings

As far as i can see the driver was driving on the "fucking road" , may he did really nodded off for a bit but that wasnt the only car accident in Japan lately ,looks like the roads are in a really bad state because Japanese gov is busier banning manga , anime and other shit rather that do something worthy for they country

Actually that wall is of a very poor design and should be curved at the ends to push an impacting vehicle back onto the road vs act like a knife.
Also also is common practice in the US and Europe for the edges of such walls to have energy absorbing crush sections.

I also find the design of the bus it's self to be suspect as well as it should have more anti intrusion structure and it appears it also would be unsafe during a roll over.

It's Japan. The driver had likely been asked to drive 12 hours long night shifts all week long. And since it's Japan, he couldn't say no.

The only kind of power/light/phone poles I've seen near the road are from wood and would most likely just snap. That was in germany btw, I think in most countries they simply don't build them that close to the road.

No, I'm not mad at all. Tokyo Disneyland is actually larger than the one in California and it's better equipped, and THAT'S my point. I personally didn't enjoy either, but I don't intend to rain on anyone's parade. If you had fun, well good for you.

shouldn't the wall be designed to have its ends curved at the edges instead of having them be straight.like metal guardrails that eases into the wall. either that or something on the ends that crumples on impact, stopping any vehicles that go into it but doesn't wildly bounce them back into traffic.

i'm not straying away from the fact that this is the fault of the driver though.

Yes the wall is of a flawed design the ones here in the US have that curved section you are describing and sometimes also an energy absorbing crush section.

But even if it's the fault of the driver. I think most the blame can be placed on the company for not ending his shift so he can sleep. So I think it goes maybe 40/60.

I'm not sure about Japan but in the US if the hours of service rules have been violated the blame falls to the company for over working the drivers.

Something must really be done to make sure the drivers aren't in a poor condition prior to getting behind the wheel. This is just as bad as drinking and driving if not worse, especially considering the way this is looking the parent companies are enforcing this kind of situation.

    Comment by Anonymous
    15:42 30/04/2012 # ! Neutral (0)

Yes, that's true, but I think the worse driving disasters are usually the cases where the driver was driving while texting, and hopefully that isn't the case here.

    22:24 30/04/2012 # ! Neutral (0)

Other than the bus driver what is at fault, is the poor design of the barrier wall and the company's policy about bus drivers. Many companies due to past accidents were required to better conditions and scheduling changes to better reflect needs like proper sleep periods or rest periods. Also, amazing no one noticed how tall was. The barrier should have been curved but most barriers I've seen are not as tall as a bus. If this barrier was shorter, it might have been less tragic

i would partly blame more at the company and the driver. my country has a strict safety guide line to ensure safety, japan should start a safety committee and implement laws to keep workers and people safe.
