Yeah, it focuses on the new characters. Basically they're old friends of Nodoka (the big breast pink hair girl) and after seeing her on TV they want to reach up and play her in the tournaments.
It's kind of like a side story. They focus on another group. Don't think of it as a season 2 but a season 1.5 or a new series altogether.
