Anime fans tasked with setting out the conditions for making a hit anime have provided a disturbingly likely list of candidate elements any modern hit is probably going to have to include…
The most highly regarded conditions for becoming a hit anime:
1. Don’t rape the original!
2. Make the art cute
3. Have a sweet OP
4. Get a cast of top seiyuu
5. Show some cool battle scenes
6. Include some unexpected twists
7. Have a sweet ED
8. Include ero in moderation
9. Use lots of moe elements
10. Fill it with lots of cute girls
Type A fans seem unlikely to be well served by this selection, but a quick comparison of the list to actual hits (notably K-ON! and Bakemonogatari, both top sellers) seems to suggest following its guidance is a sure recipe for a hit.

Hmm, I would've thought:
1. make it moe
2. make it more moe
3. repeat step 1&2 as necessary
4. when you think you've made it too moe it means it's actually not moe enough
5. have no male characters (this takes important screen-time away from moe)
6. repeat step 3 as necessary
7. Unless it can be done in a very moe manner, do not make the plot or characters too intricate (they must be moe)
8.Beach episode (on an ocean of moe)
9. ????? (jk. it's actually just moe)
10. PROFIT (From BD/DVD sales)
that sounds like a plan
i'll buy 10
I'll take 20
I'll take NONE and will be watching good-old-anime.
Add yuri and I'll give you my house.
i buy the whole stock
DPBS! Is the Formula!!!
1) Date Episode
2) Pool Episode
3) Beach Episode
4) Spa (hot springs) Episode
Every Ecchi and/or Harem Anime Must Follows this Strict Formula!!! (with variations of occurrence~)
Good ol DPBS!
Needs an onsen episode too.
11. And All Episode 12's should always be a "Moe Christmas Episode"
that looks more like "10 steps for making a shit anime"
Don't forget fanservice.
Hell no! Do that and you can forget getting me to buy it! There's too much moe crap now. We need less! I'm all for cute girls, but enough is enough. Gimme more like Clannad, Kiddy Grade, and Full Metal Panic.
And for Tsunami's sake, make the girls older than twelve freaking years old! >_<
why older, why not around 12 but the body of a schoolgirl, cute face but excellent body?
Did this guy seriously said his sick of moe and then put Clannad as an example of not moe?
@Sylar Yeah, that idiot doesn't know what Moe means, let alone most North Americans.
taking comment too seriously...
you forgot to add "include tons of ero"
1. Don't rape the original!
Hollywood: Nothing to do here in Japan...
The original list should be
1.- Add incest
2.- Make the main character to have a look of 10 year old but she is actually 18 for the pedophilia guys i mean lolicon.
3.- Made them get nude for stupid reasons, and i mean stupid.
4.- Give a fuck about the plot, very important.
5.- Main character should have mega huge boobs.
6.- Create a world were male doesnt exist, just the main one.
7.- Girls should torture the main charcters for stupid reasons.
8.- Extremely annoying voices, the more annoying the more cute.
9.- Make a real old character to almost rape a lolicon ten year old character.
10.- Really important, create a dad that wants to fuck their own daughter.
And we are all done.
Isn't that a bit contradictory? How can the main character have huge boobs while still appearing 10?
Because Japan
...star wars...
yep, sounds about right!
Hollywood: This is an interesting story, but Fuck Japan, we'll do it our way, this is international playground now!
This sh*t is good but need more action and explosion, bring me Michael Bay,
and some porn star while you are at it, we aint need no 17 years old highschool girl, we need womanly booty. Let's man this sh*t up !
=> It turn out sucks most of the time!
Your uber phallas can take an uber flying fuck off a cliff.
Hmmm...Lets see
1. comment filled with hate.
2. comment contains one or more swear/curse words.
3. comment shows obvious trolling.
Yup, We got ourselves a badass over here.
That is superb!
I approve!
1. Don’t rape the original!
2. Make the art high quality.
3. Get a cast that is right for the show
4. Include some unexpected twists
5. Don't be afraid to take a risk
6. Don't rely on the characters been cute to sell the show.
8. Disregard any formula for success.
Selling 5000 DVD's to a hardcore audience isn't success. It's Settling.
I think my list is way better.
The problem is, with Anime being so expensive to make, studios are afraid to take risks as just 1 bad show can easily bankrupt them.
Agreed on all counts. This is a far superior list, but animation doesn't exist in an economic vacuum.
If it sells, a good show sticking to this list will sell WELL, but the chances...?
It depends on what you mean by risks. If by risks you mean, make an anime without moe, lolis, or fanservice, then this is not a risk any more. It is a formula for failure. The only exception could be a shounen like anime.
>japan
>risk
derp, doesn't work that way kid
"4. Get a cast of top seiyuu"
unimportant, as long as the voice fit the character then it doesn't matter if the seiyuu is a top one or a new one.
now.... where the flip is the story? The story is important and should have been the 1st. It is premature to assume that the original had a good story.
Take 'Mayoi Neko Overrun!' as an example. It fit the list nicely, but the story was weak since the original work depended on nudity as its selling point. Result, I don't think a 2nd season is every coming out!
"8. Include ero in moderation"
don't hold back on the ero, it is good and very healthy!
"10. Fill it with lots of cute girls"
too many characters weaken the plot, KISS (keep it simple, stupid)
As K-on has proven, you don't need a story at all to make a hit anime.
I only watched the 1st episode of the 1st season. So I won't judge it.
but I have to confess my surprise on how popular it is!
Truthfully? You're not missing much then.
After first season I was whole like
"Well, that's something new for me to watch"
But once I begun watching 2nd season...uhh...well
Suffice to say, I abandoned it after forcing myself to reach 4th episode.
It's just not fun, unless watching and constantly adoring same moe girls is your thing.
well it's adoring the same moe girls doing lots of different things
and in the movie it's the same moe girls doing different things in a different location
if that's not something
You took my statement too literally perhaps. But I'm to be blamed for choice of words.
Still, I'm positive You know what I meant.
K-On is a "healing" anime. You watch it to recover faith in humanity.
Yes there is a joke there about how K-On fans make you lose faity i humanity in the first place or so, please pull that stick outta your butt hole and relax, learn to appreciate the nice things in life.
TL:DR: cheer up emo boy.
When you hthink about it. first episodes "lets get to budokan!" is basically your "story"
now im not defending k-on by a long shot here, but that bare minimum there is your story. everything done after that fact was a step towards the "end" of the story. it sucks, but sadly it counts.
im not saying i like it, but thats what they gave us, so all we can do is take it and roll with it and make the most of it.
K-on is slice of life anime right ? So it really doesnt need story
Lol. Ah, no. It IS Slice-of-life. It depicted day-to-day experience of the girls. What do you think slice of life is?
I think it hardly qualifies as slice-of-life.
@ Anon 17:10 - about your item #10: "...too many characters weaken the plot." -- that doesn't happen.
What *does* happen is the anime "feels" weak if the characters do not have well-developed personalities and back-stories.
Harem and moe anime tend to have shallow, standardized character types.
* Big-busted, clumsy girl
* Fragile, sickly girl
* Sidekick guy who is nothing but a slapstick-comedy plot device
* Tsundere girl or guy
* Loyal, enthusiastic girl-next-door/osannanajimi
* Cute twin sisters
- etc. -
Mayoi Neko Overrun failed because they changed the director every episode, making the series completely different from the original (Number 1) and making it very inconsistent. Story? It was pretty good leading up to episode 3, but then it just all went down the drain from there.
I thougt episode 9 was the strongest myself. Still enjoyed the whole series, as I thought it was a fun story with likeable characters and decent art. In my book, that's pretty much all you need.
I have to agree, it was ok.
i only watch it because only because the art is my type.. story wise, not enjoying it so much..
Sad that ero is such an important element now-a-days..
to me nothing is wrong with ero in anime, as long the plot is interesting and the character is likeable..
..and also not the type of overused ero scene where protagonist enter a room where the heroins is changing, thus receive slap/punch/kick on the face (damn, I think I have seen this kind of scene in like thousand different anime)
ero is okay, as long as it is handled creatively and not to be the main focus in the anime..
I disagree with your opinion on no.4. In fact, I would totally agree with that because I watch TWGOK because got Kanae Itou, who is my favorite seiyuu.
Don't forget about a random Boy who has the hots for this one girl but ends up getting all these other girls and is too stupid to know that all the friends he has are girls and somehow your sister develops hots for you too and then controversy happens and drama then picks one girl then happy ending. then anime sites are like "You picked the wrong girl" This is my thesis.
To love ru?
"then picks one girl"
"To love ru"
...what?
I Know!! Can't Wait for freak'n Darkness's Anime to come out!! SO MUCH WIN!! >.<
love hina again
Yo Love Hina (manga...) IS DA SHIT!!
