The jump from irreligious to non-Christian faiths not being recognized as faiths is the bigger leap. But that can very well be based on anecdotal evidence.
Side note, the whole anti-gay thing that arose in Japan. Was in part due to the work of Christian missionaries as well as the Meiji's regime's desire to become more Westernized, so they clamped down on these expressions of sexuality.

I've heard even some gay folks argue about whether it's a choice. I doubt it, myself, it's not like I made a choice to be heterosexual. Regardless, we people with sense need to argue vehemently against homophobes of all stripes no matter what reasoning they may use. We like to think of Japan as an advanced country, but in certain areas they really need work--their views towards women's rights and homosexuality are two of the biggest ones. It's not a *general* choice. There are only certain parts that are left for personal preference. Naturally speaking, heterosexuality is our default way of ensuring the survival of our kind. Homosexuality doesn't lead to that end. The main difference is that not only mankind but a fairly large number of other animals, don't really care about being that limited down. Our sexuality is far more than just preprogrammed patterns. Every one of us can make conscious decisions about what brings us the most pleasure.
People argueing against whatever form of sexuality are *always* afraid about their own validity. If you just accept that every person has their own way of doing things, you'll live a much more relaxed life.
You are not born that way. Sure some people may have a natural inclination towards it but can then turn out to not be gay. There's also environmental factors to consider (such as what emotional ties are made and to whom, culture, etc).
Saying you were born that way is an easy way to not take responsibility for your actions and also insinuates that the person "born that way" could not be happy with it. If someone is gay then they need to stand up and be proud, take responsibility and tell people that they want to be gay and are happy with their lifestyle. I have more respect for the homosexual that stands up in the faces of those who aren't and proclaims they made a choice they're proud of than the one that says "I was born this way, leave me alone."
But I do agree with equal rights for all regardless of who they are.

There's the small matter that homosexual/lesbian/bisexual behaviour between two consenting adults is one thing (as it involves two equals, no different from the standard heterosexual encounter), "pedosexual" activities on the other hand are between an adult and a child. There's a power/authority disbalance here that can negatively effect the child. (it's for that same reason that teacher/student or doctor/patient relationships are frowned upon as well.)

I really do not think anyone is born gay. I have several gay friends and they tell me that if gays are born that way then it seems likely from a young age they would've thought that it was the norm. They knew it wasn't but they still did what felt right by themselves. In other words, they made a conscience decision to be gay. But they agree, along with myself, that there may be genetic predispositions to homosexuality but that doesn't mean that the person will automatically be gay. Like someone may have a predisposition to get cancer but may not get it (and I am NOT comparing homosexuality to cancer, FYI).
Ofcourse no one thinks homosexuality is a norm. Every country on this planet considers heterosexuality as a norm. And no, you don't "turn" gay. You either are gay, straight, bi or something else. And by your logic most of us make a conscience decision to be straight.
