It starts already into the story, then moves into a flashback. This part is being presented as what's "currently happening", and it will fill in the gaps.

I've been following the manga for several years now, I was afraid that they were going to screw this one up. But great job so far!
Kind of got a 90's style feel to it, doesn't it? Something about the coloring, I think.

Yeah, anon never read the manga. Trying to solve a mystery while getting haunted isn't the definition of a pussy.
The Main Character has iron guts since the first chapter.
Pussy or not the hero is irrelevant, the show is all about the girls, and I'm not saying the girls are the only thing good about it, but that they are the ones driving the show.
Ararararagi-kun is interesting, Kyon is very interesting (although they are similar) but most harem heroes are boring and should seriously be taken out of the picture. Saki does just right without a male protagonist. So did Strike Witches.
He is actually relevant. The main character is the driving force behind the plot. Otherwise, nobody would have bothered trying to figure out the truth behind all the Yuuko ghost stories. He started the entire thing.
I'm not so sure... Does having 3 girls count as a harem these days? To me it's the magical number of "Not too much not too little" while it can create good timing for all the heroines
