The news that the long-awaited adaptation of Key eroge Little Busters! is apparently to be handled by JC Staff rather than the much hoped for Kyoto Animation has prompted tremendous outpourings of sweet otaku tears in Japan and beyond.
Non-fans of the original can probably be forgiven for not caring at all, but for overexcited Key fans hoping the title would be a blockbuster on par with Clannad the news has been devastating – though whether this is the result of the perceived weakness of JC Staff or the extreme strength of Kyoto Animation is still the subject of much anguished debate.

I think its pretty obvious this was shooped. JC Staff has been blacklisted in the anime industry from doing VN adaptions since Tsukihime (they haven't done a single one since). So why would they get one of the biggest VNs of the last decade?
I for one am a big fan of second chances. The game company I worked for collapsing and trying desperately to save its reputation kind of gave me perspective on how failure can just be the mark of a few small cogs in the system. As much as I love KyotoAni for anything, I will at least hold my judgement for now and let JC have their chance to prove themselves.
JC Staff has repeatedly failed in their efforts to animate light novels where the story is LAID OUT FOR THEM for many years running now. A visual novel requires the skill to pull a solid story from the various diverging paths to make a series that not only pleases the fans of each characters, but has an ending that won't make those who didn't "win" that angry.
Kyoani has repeatedly shown that they are capable of creating an animation from bits and pieces that is greater than the sum of its parts (4koma like K-ON are the best example of this). JC Staff on the other hand repeatedly add filler in stories that are already complete and completely trash the pacing of the original content. Zero no Tsukaima, both Index and Railgun, and most of Shakugan no Shana all suffer from JC Staff's filler and pacing issues, and ended up significantly worse than their origin material as a result.
@06:47 Well here's some Light novel adaptions they did an excellent job with:
Toradora
Toaru Majutsu no Index
Toaru Majutsu no Index II
Toaru Kagaku no Raigun
Kami-sama no Memo-chou
And the recent "original" Anime: Ano Natsu de Matteru, which was excellent.
Index and Index II had terrible pacing and cut out a massive amount of character and world descriptions that make Touma look like a moron in the anime. In the novels he's actually thinking out how to avoid much of what he gets hit with. In the anime it looks like he's running against the opponent over and over until suddenly he gets through and wins in one hit. It makes it a significantly worse adaptation than it could have been.
Railgun is HALF filler. Literally half of the entire series is JC Staff created with a minor nod from the creator as liking one part enough to name it canon. It retcons parts of the novels and source manga, and removes major plot breadcrumbs that should have lead into the sisters arc from the novels that was retold from Mikoto's perspective in the manga.
Kami-sama no Memo-chou had the contents of the series rearranged so that the very first story ended up at the very end of the anime. Why they did this is absolutely beyond me.
I agree that Toradora turned out quite well, but they cut novel content from that as well, and I'm not talking about the end where they had to work around the unfinished novels with the author's framework. They cut content from the earlier novels as well.
So no, JC Staff is not good at adapting light novels. Just because it's not horrible doesn't mean it's great. They do a mediocre job on a regular basis, and severely screw up some series.
@9:07
Excellent job on Index II?
I wanna kill myself. That's actually the worse of both seasons. Season 1 was decent but went to a slow decline because of pacing issues. Though it's not as bad as Index II which on the other hand was poorly executed.
I will unfortunately agree that Index II was painful. Index Season 1 I honestly loved the characters enough that I just wanted more of them, didn't matter how. Season 2 did in fact make Touma out to be a complete moron, as well as the villains were a bit tough to care about. I don't know what to say about that one, but it just made me sad.
Light novels notwithstanding, I admit I will be cautiously curious about how they can handle this. Perhaps they learned their lesson in some form considering Tsukihime is apparently universally ridiculed among fans. At least to a certain degree, fans do cause the industry's decisions, so with luck they take that previous adaptation's reputation into account for another game adaptation.
@14:26 I agree that Index II was adapted worse than season 1, but It was enjoyable nonetheless.
It's not "obvious" at all, that's just your conclusion.
The pictures use nothing but recycled promo pics from the past and it doesn't mention anything about the voice acting cast, even though the website said the magazine would. Its too fishy... even ANN has held off of making any news article about it since it doesn't seem legit.
None of which contradicts what I said. That's the conclusion you've come to, right or wrong. If you want to convince people that a picture has been faked, show some evidence directly related to the picture itself.
I'm not believing your blacklisting claim because JC Staff adapted Kimikiss after Tsukihime.
JC staff is till pretty good.
FFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUU........
Enough said.
Damn... So they'll have gorgeously detailed cities and backgrounds instead of jellylike faces?
Quote for win. KyoAni is all moe jello now. But hopefully they'll shy away from Tsundere, not that I know anything about little busters...
I really don't see the problem. J.C. Staff is a great production company. CRY SOME MORE JAPAN!
What the fuck are you smoking? J.C staff sucks shit 90% of the time
Pray that this is the 10%
Pray....For Answer
And when they don't suck they stretch a show out 2-3 seasons where the first is good and 2-3 suck ass.
I really need what you are smoking cause if it can delude your mind to such extend.....
Wow enjoy your generic DEEN tier shit.
Heck I think even DEEN is getting better than JC Staff.
Nooooo...I feel so betrayed!! ;(
Well, I for one LOVE J.C. Staff! I'll be there suckin' in the the soft shiny moeness. Enjoy your RAGEANGST.
JC rarely produces moe. If you want moe go for KyoAni.
this anon does know neither shana, biribiri nor taiga :{
Taiga, Louise, Shana... The attack of the clones!!!
They're no match for Mikuru.
no idea whats goin on but, hope this shit goes well
Let's hope that their adaption won't be like... KimiKiss!
Or... *gasp*... Tsukihime!!
I am so seriously pissed off that I can go apeshit right now.
No shit captain.
I liked their index and railgun series. Biribiri!
me too :)
04:36 Those are actually my favorite series. J.C. Staff did an excellent job with the Anime adaptation. The quality of the Blu rays they released were incredible. They really used some of the most gorgeous backgrounds in Railgun/Index II.
I liked railgun... has great characters. Index... not so much.
Ditching Spiky guy and Ika Musume for Biribiri and Kuroko is the best move, ever. Plus Saten.
i want to say that its better than not getting it at all
but surely theres a reason why people are in angst
well i dont know what works JC was responsible for off the top of my head so i wouldnt know
They're responsible for the all the atrocities with kugaymiya in them.
Index II sure as hell wasn't an atrocity.
It was great. And yes, I've read the Novels.
Then you must have terrible memory, because the pacing of season 2 was incredibly bad. Huge chunks of the attack on Academy City in particular were cut or altered, and that should have been the pinnacle of the season's content. Index had pretty animation (most of the time, what was the character designer smoking when they animated the first Index II ending?) but pretty animation is not all that's necessary to create a good adaptation.
Toradora was one of the best light novel adaptations they managed to pull off. You'd think they would have taken some lessons from that, but it appears their memory of past successes and failures is as good as your is of the novels.
@00:38 Yeah, but I still enjoyed it.
JC Staff was behind all the "atrocities" with Rie Kugimiya or however you want to spell her name? What about these?
Full Metal Alchemist/Brotherhood (BONES)
Hand Maid May, Cosplay Complex, G-On Riders, Akane-iro ni Somaru Saka (TNK)
Umineko no naku koro ni, Marimite (DEEN)
Rizelmine, Pita Ten (Madhouse)
Hayate the Combat Butler!, Zettai Karen Children (Synergy SP)
Idolm@aster, Fairy Tail (A-1 Pictures)
Rosario + Vamire, Saki (Gonzo)
Ladies vs. Butlers (Xebec)
Diomedea (Astarotte no Omocha)
Gintama (Sunrise)
Ninja Nonsense (UFOTable)
12 Kingdoms (Pierrot)
Queen's Blade, Hyakka Ryouran Samurai Girls (Arms)
If Kugimiya, any show she's in, and any studio that gives her work are automatically bad, then so are all the shows and studios listed above.
But in all those series she is not a stuck up bitch who JC Staff calls a tsundere.
DAMN IT..I WAS LOOKING FORWARD TO THIS!!! ;(
Why not keep looking forward to it until its out? It doesn't suck yet.
I just hope that J.C. Staff's tendency to make it have at least three seasons until the story finished carry over to here.
Now all they need is a wimpy male protagonist and an obnoxious loli voiced by kugiemiya.
I don't see the problem here. KyoAni is good but JC Staff isn't bad. Look at their recent anime: Ano natsu de matteru, Kill me baby, Kami sama no memocho, etc. They can handle that anime as good as any other company
About Kyoani, I officially hate them since that Endless Eight retard
I like JC Staff too, but KyoAni is the better studio hands down.
Also JC Staff sucks at mastering blu ray releases.
@06:41 Have you seen Railgun and Index II on Blu ray? I was speechless with how stunning some of the scenes looked. If J.C. Staff has a decent budget they can really work wonders.
J.C. Staff never never release their shit on anything greater than 720p. They don't do 1080p.
@Solace yeah I know the Blu rays were 720p, but the quality was stunning nonetheless. like I said, If J.C. Staff has a high budget they can really do some incredible stuff, whether it's animation, sound, (I've sound!) or even the story itself. Index/Railgun is proof of that.
I will drop this anime if it only have 13 eps and no season 2. Thanks to JC STAFF!!!
Even though visual quality is very good in Index. Story is not very good (cliched and terrible pacing).
@twonline Well, the story in the Light novel is definitely not "cliche". The pacing problem in the Anime series is J.C. Staff's fault.
You should check out the novels. they're really good.
You can't give JC Staff Credit for Ano Natsu. Production I.G is the reason the animation turned out so well, and you can thank the writers of Please Teacher/Ano Hana for the story.
I don't know about the others, but JC staff does not have a good track record my friend.
Sucks to be you for missing out on Disappearance.
JC Staff on the other hand hasn't done anything worth praising. Yeah they've done some decent works recently but that's just about that.
Not sure if troll or just stupid...
Anime you mentioned are nothing but rubbish bro.
