A teacher convicted of over a thousand counts of rape and sexual assault on his pupils has been sentenced to 4613 years in prison, only to have the sentence reduced by 4583 years on a technicality.
The 46-year-old teacher, himself married and a father, operated a cram school in the Taiwanese city of Taichung.
There he took advantage of girls as young as 11 by luring them into basement “personal guidance” sessions and taking them to isolated spots in the school’s minibus, subjecting them to his attentions in groups and on a daily basis for a 4 year period.
He would offer them small payments and gifts to help keep them quiet, as well as intimidating them with threats of being arrested or taken from their parents, but eventually one of his victims approached the authorities.
Police say a total of 12 girls were raped 267 times and indecently assaulted a further 746 times, for a total of 1013 counts of sexual predation.
The man’s initial arrest and conviction saw him sentenced to 30 years, the maximum possible under the circumstances; he also faces civil suits.
After the defence appealed the sentence, the higher court was so disgusted by the gravity of his crimes and his lack of contrition that they decided to sentence him for each individual charge, leading to a sentence of 4613 years and 10 months.
However, this was even more pointless than is usual with such farcically long sentences – the maximum possible sentence was still 30 years, resulting in an impressive effective reduction of 4583 years and 10 months.
Both the sentence and the reduction are actually only the second highest ever handed down by Taiwanese judges – a father who repeatedly raped his daughter apparently managed 4739 years and a similar reduction.

The death sentence is barbaric and brutal. You don't have a society that values life if you engage in violent regime change or uses the death penalty. In the States, innocent people are too often sentenced to death. Since 1973, over 138 people have been released from death rows in 26 states because of innocence. Nationally, at least one person is exonerated for every 10 that are executed. If you imprison someone and then later find out he is innocent, you can free him. If you execute someone and then later find out he is innocent ... whoops!

Nah, death sentence has its advantages but definitely causes more problem if misused or misjudged.
In the US there is a lot of evidence that supports the fact that it costs more to hand down the death penalty then it does to keep someone imprisoned for life. Simply because of all the legal mumbo-jumbo that needs to be gone through before someone can be executed. Housing a prisoner for life costs dollars a day, and most of the time they work, which produces more money then it costs to feed, house and watch them. The real problem with the cost of the prison system, at least in the US, is the fact that about 90% of inmates are non-violent drug offenders who will be released in 2-3 years time and never enter into any prison work programs, opting instead to study for their GED or college degree.
You say killing is barbaric, but is locking someone away in a 6x8x4 box for their entire life any less barbaric? I am not saying he doesn't deserve to be locked away, but perhaps death would be just as humane when you consider the amount of torture he will face in prison for his crimes. Child molesters don't last long in prisons.

I had this argument about long term imrisonment and death sentence with a friend of mine.
He said that one is taking ones life and the other is wasting funds.
So he argued that instead they could lobotomize the baddies instead which would prevent them from hurting people againwithout killing them.
I argued that being dead would had been better than being rendered unable to live by oneself but the discussion did not reached a conclusion
Then again, there are cases where you can be dead certain someone is guilty and then he gets to live off tax payer money for years on end just to be released back in society again where he/she commits the same crime 2/3 days later.
American prisons all probably a lot cheaper than the ones over here though.. where they don't even put two people in a single cell and the costs are higher than those for spending the entire time aboard a luxury cruiser.

I think prisons are wrong in the first place. Prisons as in a place you put people you don't want to see in.
Also, I don't think there are many reasons for people to commit crimes. They could just have no other choice, because they are poor or lack options in life. They could be bored because they get money, but no attention from their parents. Or they could do it simply because they can. Oppurtunity makes thieves.
We could change the world in a way, that those reasons just won't apply anymore. That leaves you with that 1% of idiots that want to leave the fucking matrix to live their lives free.
