Yet another long-running manga is finally drawing to an end – Air Gear has announced it will be concluding its 10 year serialisation in Weekly Shonen Magazine in 5 chapters.
The wave of recent endings is now prompting some definite fear that they are concluding faster than they are being replenished, and should Naruto and One Piece ever end, the manga industry could find itself in real trouble – although doubtless some would argue the average quality of manga being published would increase significantly with their extirpation.

Air Gear's art is fantastic, but the story sucked as soon as it went from a roller-blading manga to a super powered elemental preachy battle manga.
Tricks went from 1800-Wallride and Method-Spin-That-Air-MoonRider to Pile Tornado, St.Elmo's Crossfire and the most ridiculous of all, "Time".
That virtual reality match vs the original Sleeping Forrest was really the "last straw" with no hope for the series...
Every cliche you could think of was thrown at you and the shit turned more into "magic" and borderline superpowers from sticking stuff in their roller blades..
Even the ecchi pretty much disappeared over the years.. Much less the extent of it in the early volumes..
The super powers from sticking stuff into the roller blades has been around the entire time.
Oh, the regalia went from:
"Produces some wind to help tricks"
to
"Can make you fly, produce tornadoes, grow wings, can produce gusts of wind that can blow up stuff" type stuff
Not to forget all the other Regalia that also gave powers akin to something like One Piece devil fruit or the many other shounen examples with almost no real explanation/thought..
Or Ikki's bull shit regalia that is even more "Are you even trying anymore...?"
well ohgreat did make dr minami say that the airtrek units are just training wheels for drawing out the power of one's soul.
Oh!Great excels at running series in the ground by over-expanding everything about them and never truly resolving anything.
Agreed. He has this tendency of making really good concepts and starts of a series, then they just go downwards as he tries to drag them out, often in the form of well... Sudden superpowers or totally out of the arse things, not to mention leaving certain plot holes unfilled. *points to Tenjou Tenge* I literally rose up out of my chair and raised my arms to the sky with an exclamation including not the nicest of words.
His art is great, he's good at creating concepts, but he should stick with shorter stories instead of dragging them out, in my humble opinion, that is.
i agree he should stck to short series.
I agree, its even pathetic that OhGreat tries so hard to substantiate all the shit that was going on with all the physics behind it just to give a sense of realism.
yet I was still reading it weekly for years. the characters we're probably the one that got me going(besides the amazing art). the story doesn't even have to matter anymore. That's how well he portrayed the characters and maybe the only part of the manga kept "Real" (Except for the Omaha part) read it and you'll understand.
and for those who are also in the art/animation field or something similar/related to it. OhGreat! did an amazing job with AirGear, his work is ever evolving, lots of detail, great ideas, sick perspective, hot anatomy. You're sure to pickup/learn a lot of useful things and get some cool ideas.
(don't copy though)
I'm half surprised there's no John Omaha Steaks meme, so much win could be had
Same with Tenjou Tenge, starts off as some fighting manga, but ends up as some highty mighty philosophical manga with an unescapable destiny as theme, was not so surprised Air Gear went the way it did :P
The irony is, IMO this is the shittiest manga from Oh Great! but it is the longest to be serialized.
no, tenjou tenge was worse. once that one fell hard and just died off.
Ah.. the JoJo card, it's always fun to see all these mangakas paying homage to Araki but whenever they try to go out of the usual "fighting battle manga" and try to incorporate JoJo elements they just fail to realize that there's a reason why they are the ultimate manifestation in each arc.
Also they evolve thru each series it's not the same mechanic over and over raging from stoping the time for 3 seconds, to deleting time, to gravity while switching to loops in reality creation, to paralel dimension travelling.
Involving any of these ultimate manifestations into the 2nd quarter of the series asides feeling rushed it feels badly done.
And Oh great preaches way too much, QC Edit process its a huge pain in the arse, Viz destroying the manga over NA didnt help either.
I love Oh Great!'s artwork, the creativeness and attention to detail was amazing. The story was great in the beginning but then it paved into a fantasy magical battle manga. I feel like Ito Ogure should work with a writer so his stories won't be blown out of proportions like he did with Tenjou Tenge and Air Gear.
exactly, the man needs a ghost writer to handle the story.
Its the Concept of Love JSRF
geez, everything is coming to an end these days. course air gear should have ended ages ago, as ohgreat quickly runs out of ideas with all of his works.
Just bring everything back to zero... >_>
I agree, more Code Geass...
i don't think that's what he meant -_-
If Onepiece and Naruto end it'll be the greatest day in manga history. It's actually those two (and to some extent Bleach) that have been killing the manga industry for years.
Naruto needs to end. The gayest manga in the world.
Bitch please. look at sales numbers
Bitch please naruto and bleach suck!
He didn't say they are good, just that they sell, two very different things.
yeah right one piece has the best story ever
no its doesnt. its generic shonen.
spoiler but the one piece treasure will be 'friendship and the journey'.
because its shonen and thats the only ending a shonen reveal can do.
You're right. One piece is so generic.
You obviously have not read One Piece. :P
Hmmm...
Well, dare I dream "Oh! Great" aka "Silky Whip" will get back to making "Decent" so to speak Hentai manga?
this makes me all kinds of sad. i been reading this manga since i was 14. kinda feels like seeing a close friend move away. but i do admit the story was far out there, and hard to understand, but all the crazy, unrealistic new twists and story progressions is what kept my attention all these years
I'm both sad and relieved. It's sad to see anything you love end but god did it get bad after a while.
so what's the real power of Sky Regalia? Darn, what's the power of storm king? What's the difference?
Thankfulness to my father who stated to me concerning this website, this web site is genuinely amazing.
I bet Bakuman has a hand in it. End the story on a high note instead of dragging its bones around.
I loved air gear because it brought back nostalgia of jet set radio. However as soon as they put one of the main female characters into Obama and had him run around as a barely clothed japanese teenager I lost so much interest in it. I am glad it is coming to an end. Not because I don't think it was a good manga. But because after 10 years the story just changed too much from what it originated as.
ironically, i could picture one of the villains in jrsf possessing one of the riders bodies.
Im inclined to agree with most commentors that this manga needs to end. It started as a fun jet set radio esque skating gang romp then devolved into shonen and powerlevel bollocks.
when he started ranting changing the plot based on whatever was in the news- like suddenly making it about the '99%' when on wallstreet started you could tell he had no idea of the plot he was pulling out of his perma drunken ass.
I mean can anyone who still reads it actually explain whats going on?
>technology capable of limitless energy
yes we can
>people too stupid to use it safely
no we can't
the 1% forgot how stupid the 99% really is
ahm basically what's going on is this battle->defeat->traing+realization->rematch->win->repeat with BS on the side
finally that trash ends. other than the ecchi stuff, the story sucked hairy balls. at first it was good since it's about roller blades, then it became the fate of the world due to the 1st magic roller blade experiment -__-
Wow, I can't believe I've actually found a situation where I can say this phrase:
"...And not a single fuck was given that day."
Someone give me a summary of what's happened till now. Has Ringo and Ikki gotten together? Is Ikki some super special awesome wing road king?
Good now they can make Air Gear: Brotherhood or some shit.
after dropping this series somewhere around chapter 180, i decided to reread the whole thing and get caught up with the upcoming ending. and you know what, I enjoyed it every minute of it. there's a lot of unnecessary & unexplored stuff, but not enough to kill the series.
the only real complaint i have is going into the ending... i don't like that ringo has turned into asuna. i thought the couple chapters referencing negima were used because of the publisher, but with her turning into asuna, i guess ohgreat is a fan of akamatsu.
my favorite mangaa
my favorite manga
It is still one of the cheapest artbook that you can own.
Ohgreat is a talented artist, but as a writer he is shit.
Wow about time, it was going into the direction of some weird philosophical psychological stuffs.
