The recently held 2012 Toyko Marathon has been attracting attention for the profusion of cosplay runners, not least amongst them a rather convincing depiction of the Messiah, running barefoot in a loincloth and carrying an effigy of the True Cross on his back…
The unfortunate practicalities of having to run a long marathon in chilly February seem to restrict the cosplay possibilities of the event, although evidently not its variety:

Every marathon here in Brazil has a lot runners in all types of strange costumes, I assumed it happens in every marathon around the world as well.
There do seem to be an abundance of japanese immigrants in brazil too tho...maybe some similar roots?
I ran a 5K a few months bacck. There were a couple girls dressed as superheros, and I was dressed like I was going on safari. But we were 3 out of a thousand or so.
No, I ran in a LA marathon once. There were absolutely NO costumes. Only white shirts with their paper bibs/IDnumbers, sports caps, black shorts/kneepants.

Marathons are 26.2 miles. The website for the Tokyo Marathon also lists a 10km race so I'm guessing all the costumes are probably from that.

I find this funny. Otakus will whip out the good DSLR cameras yet have shitty to moderately good pics of cos-players. Yet for this event, people whip out the point and shoots and turn on "digital zoom" and have utter shit for pics.
