Guilty Crown “Anti-Japanese”

Japanese nationalists are complaining that Guilty Crown is part of an anti-Japanese conspiracy to impugn Japanese territorial integrity.
Episode 17 of Guilty Crown has been accused of being “anti-Japanese” for depicting a map of Japanese territory which fails to highlight the disputed “Northern Territories” (the lower part of the Kuril Islands, between Hokkaido and Kamchatka) as being part of Japan and not Russia:
Opinions range from this being anything from a simple mistake to a conspiratorial attempt by the broadcasters (none other than Fuji TV, the bane of Japan’s crazy right-wingers) to negate Japan’s claim to the islands.
The territorial map for people lucky enough to have not encountered this issue before:
The territories are claimed by Japan but occupied by Russia, having been grabbed just after Japan surrendered at the end of WWII, on the basis that anything Russia can get troops onto belongs to it.
Complicated wrangling over the wording of the post-war treaties and which islands they actually refer to has only led to Russia and Japan maintaining their conflicting claims, with the US and EU generally supporting Japan’s position.
The islands themselves are of essentially symbolic significance, being small, frigid, sparsely populated and largely only of economic interest to fishermen.
Thanks to Fuji TV’s involvement, online this is either being taken as yet more evidence of their supposed treasonous political bias against Japanese national interests, or as evidence of just how obsessive the net right are:

Korean animators just do the grunt work in animating something. The final animation checks for these anime are always done in Japan's internal studios.
Either way, this is a non issue really, as these territories are so conflicted and contested, most normal people don't pay it any heed. Coincidentally, crazy nationalist do pay attention. But really for nothing.
Their paranoia is really akin to hitting a concrete wall. There's nothing TO get so worked up over.
Plus, it's not like they're contesting the integrity of entire nations due to a few small fringe islands nobody is really using to full effect. Either way, nationalism in general is just ugly and counter productive to growth of human beings. As sappy as it sounds, they have NASA space photography of these lands and they do not have some magical borders drawn on it as they look upon it from space.
All of it is just human paranoia. And the last time I checked, humans are disappointingly idiotic a lot of the times.

The West to Japan contrasts are pretty amusing when you look at it.

Hokkaido's economic scene is way too different from Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu. If there would be independence movements in Japan, Hokkaido and Okinawa will be the likely the candidates.
It's a sad situation with the Ainu since the culture is effectively dead and after several generations, their people would be fully integrated by the Japanese population that was forcibly placed there. The Ainu have it much, MUCH worse than American Indians do nowadays, which actually holds some leverage. Ainu has none.
Japan could have gotten half of those islands back in the 90's, but they were too stuck up and instead insulted the Russian president who had decided to make a good offer on a vodka-induced whim.
Damn, when I saw that title and picture immediately I remembered the class given by that retired Japanese diplomat, with all the boring-ass details off the whole protracted squabble. (yes, the Japanese think they'll get them back 'eventually' cause they are a superior race that is capable of waiting fucking forever since they're so patient, unlike the stupid alcoholic russians, so the islands are going to be their again eventually)

It's interesting to do a Google Map thing on these islands with the Satellite view enabled. Skinny roads leading nowhere, sparse clusters of houses here and there, and every now and then collections of large buildings completely isolated and seeming to serve no useful purpose. There are mysterious goings on here.
Japan's ardent nationalists should don their samurai outfits, strap on their swords, put on geta, and go camp in tents on these islands to repel the Russian hordes. The Siberia Yagyu may be getting ready for a second assault.

The Soviets took what they can. Which includes southern Sakhalin, the rest of the Kuril islands, Manchuria and the Korean peninsula. Manchuria they gave back to Communist China, and the Korean peninsula was partitioned between a US-backed south and USSR-backed north.

first 12 episodes are actually. the reason why they're in such an uproar over the latest episodes map is because it's past episode 12, since you can call it an actual show episode 13 and onward :D
Funny thing is you can actually START watching it at episode 13, and STILL be able to make even MORE sense of a coherent story than what was possible in the first 12 episodes... they were THAT bad XD

Japan hasn't signed a peace treaty with Russia specifically because USA and EU are on Japan's side of the dispute. Russia won't give those islands up not because it's greedy, but because at the state which Russia has been put in after the fall of USSR, any surrendered land will be viewed and exploited as a sign of weakness.
