Is it really that surprising? Just because Otaku get some weird moe fix from watching a high school girl band doesn't mean the show is perverse or anything like that. It just romanticizes a fun club playing music, really what's surprising about girls that age seeing that and wanting to try it? I bet they're making the horrible discovery that the ratio is not equal parts practicing/cake eating/hanging out, but if you really want to play, it's 90% practicing.
I know K-ON! isn't a documentary, but I was constantly irritated by the way they made it look anyone could learn an instrument well enough to write and perform a competent song in only a couple months without spending most of your waking hours practicing your ass off.
