Saikano should be number one. I don't know how many times the girl protagonist say "Sorry" its quite depressing.
hey, at least when MadoMagi hits a reset button (or five), it has the decency to remain bitter-sweet at best.
The only depressing thing about Madoka is that only two of the four characters I hated died.

overrated mainstream visual novel, it doesn't match up with masterpieces such as muv luv alternative. In fact, why hasn't there been an anime been made already?

Yea, me too. Air caught me off guard as I was expecting the last eps to focus on some sort of love plot between Misuzu and Yukito. A great series.
same here. I was expecting (stop reading this if you still haven't seen Air TV, or played the original game, and miraculously managed to avoid spoilers up to this point... in which case, you go fucking watch the series, now!)....
Yukito sacrificing himself, possessing his doll, and somehow going back in time to reincarnate as a crow would've done something for Misuzu herself... but it was really only good for her cycle of reincarnation (and even that was merely implied). The girl was still doomed to go out in what is still easily one of the most heart-wrenching scenes Key ever made (which is saying a lot for them).

No Cowboy Bebop? Everyone splits up at the end right when Faye finally regained her memories and found a place to belong and of course what happened to Spike and Julia. In fact, alot of the episodes through out the series had tragic/bitter sweet endings. I think that's what made the series so memorable.
Black Lagoon? Because of the tarps? Or what? I cheered when they spoiler died /spoiler because they were so annyoing.

Some of these are depressing because of how bad they are...Victory Gundam,Umineko(when compared to the Visual Novel)

clearly only a few people have watched saikano, or else it would be more near the top the top, thats why these lists are useless: only people who have watched all these animes have a right to vote, or else it just a popularity contest
agreed, the name Akemi still sends shivers down my spine. I went in thinking it would be a fairly average anime and ended emotionally butt raped
I bought the first DVD or two of Saikano, and *quit* watching the series because it was getting depressing.
Same thing for Claymore.
I'd bump Grave of the Fireflies to slot #1. I have the DVE. I watched the whole thing. Once.
School Days was not depressing. It went into a W-T-F, unexpected-hard-left-turn horror-mode that left me amazed and laughing.
Not really. I'm all into depressing stuff and Saikano is by far the worst anime I've ever seen. It was more hilarious than it was sad. Same goes to Elfen Lied.
That being said, it's actually quite a good list, with a few older/less known shows that deserve some attention, namely KimiNozo, Fafner and Narutaru.
saikano is one of the most depressing titles ever! I remember the funsubber putting a notice on the 10th episode saying "if you wish for a happy end, stop watching now".

You know, when I saw everyone died, I thought it's actually a happier ending than what I expected.
Saikano is... just too much. You can only care to a certain limit. Past that point is... oh well, kill them all already. And rage starts to take over sadness and depression.

I dont know, Clannad has sadness, but in the end, as a whole is not depressing. Same with Kanon.

What I really wanted to mean was, yes most of them probably are newcomers, but there are a handful of old ones too, Vistory Gundam and Dog of Flanders (I'm pretty sure that this is old XD)
