“Super-Cute” Fangs Spread to 3D

Fans of the fang are not just restricted to 2D any more, and it seems even some real women are opting to preserve or even create their own cute little fang – however there are still a great many who consider the phenomenon best restricted to 2D…
The “fang” tooth configuration (an out-of-alignment canine tooth in the upper jaw) which is such a staple element of moe character design is known as “yaeba” (八重歯) in Japanese, and the term is often encountered in non-otaku contexts (“kiba” (牙) also enjoys some currency as otaku jargon – meaning simply “fang”).
The fang itself is subjected to orthodontic correction with much less frequency than in the west, and treated with much greater forbearance.
In fact, thanks to the influence of moe the reputation of the fang as merely a dental defect rather than a “charm point” seems to have eroded to the extent that some women are actually opting to get dental work to enhance their fangs – even if only to better milk creepy otaku fans:

I'm not really much of a fan.
As far as 3D vs 2D, it really depends on the rest of the girl.
I gotta agree. Cute protruding fangs are one thing, but plenty of those pics just had girls with bad teeth.
same, it actually looks pretty good on the girl in the tracksuit at the top, but on most it just looks off (like pic 16) and in some cases (pic 9) they need some serious realignment work done
and of course AKB is at the forefront of any possible otaku fetish.

It *can* look cute on 3D women, so long as the fang is just pointy, and not mis-aligned.
But in the 2D world, such fang-girls are 99.9% of the time shown with their fang, or fangs, AND NO OTHER TEETH.
(Envisions 3D women going to dentists for removal of all non-canine teeth... shudder...)

Never thought I'd make this comparison... but this is like taking the bible literally.
The fang is a personality representation done through artistic exaggeration. It's like any other aspect of character design where each element of their design is somehow useful to help the audience identify with them (or against them) based on how they look. The people doing operations to enlarge their eyes are just as strange because we KNOW what humans are supposed to look like. It gets strange when we see such an obvious adjustment. We also know what healthy teeth look like, and this is the same situation. Obviously the fang is a representation of a 'catty' nature, whether it's their character to begin with or just specifically inserted to play on that specific reaction, like with Kirino.
Taking it literally into reality is a little bit... I mean the before picture there was perfect! It has a slight overlap of the lip, a fang-like shape, and compositionally fit with the smile and was cute. The after makes her look like a brainless Twilight fan who went too far.
It's just unfortunate.

Me neither, the fake ones just look terrible. Plus, why go to such lengths? Besides, i have fangs, not out of alined canines, just oversized ones thanks to mother nature and i gotta tell you. They're horrible, aside form being able to tear into something tough easier, there just a hassle. Why would anyone 'pay for them.' Hell, give me the money and i'll give them mine. I hate these things.

The Japanese Wikipedia article on yaeba actually mentions vampires as a reason why westerners are less tolerant of overly prominent canines...
i am a westerner .... and i can tell you something.... canine teeth are used for schock moments usually (beside's eating)

It only works in 2D because all of the teeth are straight and the incisors are just longer than average, really.
