As a guy, I still feel disgusted over the intrusiveness of these photos. I like cosplay - A LOT, to the point that I would indeed call it a fetish. But I think this really takes it a step too far and intrudes on them and common decency. I would have to agree with the group that you claim is all women, and say that this is truly objectifying these girls. Maybe that's just protocol in Japan for cosplayers, and as an American I don't understand, but these photos would get you kicked out of any convention here in the US.
Well, I went to ColossalCon 10 this year, the cosplayers were begging to get their photos taken, unfortunately im too poor to have a neat camera, i only had my 20$ verizon phone, but every pic i tried to take, the cosplayers couldnt help but bust a pose, you havent been to enough cons, or any good ones. there werent many trying to get crotch-shots, but those that were, were looked upon as cute little children, so the cosplayers didnt think anything of it.
NOT A SINGLE ONE OF THESE ARE ANGLE PICTURES. Just nice camera with good objective and using program to zoom. The girl's objective themselfs, if you want to talk about it. I think it's just nerds having fun. If you go to con, what is so bad about taking pictures of cosplayers? That is what they dress up for.

This is a small handful of otaku doing stuff like this. Hell, with the small amount of pics here it might just be one really creepy one. Most western guys know better than to cross this line out of decency, and most Japanese guys don't have any decency but are too afraid of women to do this.
And people didn't find it peculiar when the guy taking the photos is practically lying underneath the girl to get the best crotch shot? Happens every time on any con on this planet. And we all know it. I don't really see anything surprising here. It's one of the reasons why fans have a bad rep.

Treating the woman as a whole? So we have to get to know each and every cosplayer to fully understand them. I agree with both of your points, but neither of you are the reasons for censorship laws. Cosplayers dress up to make themselves the character they want (or just get paid to do it). They go to these places to have others look at them. Whether it's to show off how great their costume looks or for the personal feeling of being "in character". Either way, they put themselves out there, whether revealing or covered head to toe in heavy clothing, to be looked at. It's completely absurd to think that if a guy was wearing a speedo that not a single person would stare at his junk. I'm sure both men and women would look at him as a whole and completely avoid the speedo. It's not "objectifying" if all you are doing is taking pictures of a female or male body, who is on display to allow you to take pictures. Face, ass, toes, whatever. It's the female form and it is beautiful. I'm sure this wouldn't be a problem if somebody went around and took pictures of just the left eye of each cosplayer. Then it would be "artistic".
