I've been to japan as well. I found most of the girls were either cute/hot or ugly as shit, most were on the ugly side unfortunately. There were very few that were simply average.
I've been there as well, but i think it's a matter of which part you were at. The Kanagawa prefecture has a lot of traditonal beauty's. Sapporo also has many beautiful women.
I didn't imply that all of them are/were. Many != all. But as PirateKing said, Japan seems to have a higher than average ammount of cute woman.
